I have a craftsman 6.5 push mower. I was trying to start it by pulling the string (after i primed it 3 times like it read to do). But i forgot to hold down the handle part. When i did realize i had to hold it down to start, it's now blowing out white smoke and it keeps cutting off. (yes i'm a female) :-)

You did no harm. Try pulling a few more times and if that doesn't work, prime it 3 more times and if that still doesn't work, prime it 3 MORE times. It should start.

I have the same model purchased last spring from Home Depot. I finally learned to prime it 6 times instead of 3 like it says on the mower. After pushing the primer 6 times mine starts fine. It usually requires priming even when the engine is warm to get it to re-start unlike any mower I have had in the past.

Check the governer, its a lever that pulls the throttle plate from the engine side. Try manually overriding it (twist it open as the engine's running) and see if that does it.

Don't prime it 6 times.

Prime it once and try starting. Keep trying with one prime.

If that doesn't work, let it sit for a bit. And then prime it two times and try starting again.

If that doesn't work, try priming 3 times.

Then try half-choke with one pull only, and then move choke to run for the second pull.

The saw might have an on-off button

usually theres just a few bolts to take off on the top, and the whole rip cord assembly will pull right out, allowing you to install the new one.
