The brushes inside are worn and arcing against the armature you need to replace it it would cost more to repair than to replace.

I charged my batteries and went to do some work around the house and the drill moved very slowly and smoke came from the vents at the rear of the drill above the handle

Happens on new Hitachi drills for some reason during the break in period. If you still get the smoke and problems, then take it back to the store for exchange if your within 30 days warranty. Call Hitachi and have them deal with it if your within your 1 year warranty.

I have a Makita #6347d, when I have been using the drill I had some smoke from the battery connection to the drill and the housing of the drill had some smell of smoke. Whats up? Thanks, Bill

Check what gear you in, the Makita will smoke if you exert to much torque, consider buying a decent impact driver? If its not under much pressure then it may be a fault with the drill. I have owned one and it was reliable but sometimes under-powered for an 18volt compared with others on the market.
Hope this helps

Makita 2071 Smoking, probably overheated but still working

When an AC motor is stalled, very high currents pass through the motor windings and melt the insulation on the windings; the smoke was the result of the motor winding insulation being melted. This causes a reduction in motor torque and premature failure.

You should suggest that your neighbor buy you a new drill and he keep the one that he ruined.

When i use the drill it smokes real bad where the batt. connects

you have a short in your drill motor. I would not recommend using it as it is possible for the battery to explode.

DeWalt is probably the best made drill motor. I would look to sending it back to the factory for repairs. Run the internet for DeWalt and get a phone # to call them. You never know, this may be a problem the factory may fix for free.

Drill started to smoke while useing

Usualy when a drill is put under extreme load the windings get hot on the armature. Sometimes the coating on the windings melts off and short together. the drill is on its last leg when this happens

Dewalt cordless drill

You have burned out the drill motor, it is shorted, the battery smoked due to a direct short, one thing I don't understand why the thermal limiter didn't trip in battery pack, I would contact manufacturer and try to get hem to buy you a new drill.

Gets very hot and smokes

cooling holes blocked
drill is being used at too hi a pressure, so the bit does not clear debris fast enough,
bit is blunt, even diamond drills blunt
the objuect being drilled is a composite, and some part of the composite is flammable
using a steel twist bit where a carbide impact bit should be used

not solution just some things to check
