Have had a good look on the net and no STK 8170! Except your post on Fixya!! Which is odd. So I'm thinking you might have read the number wrong.

Convergance chip

devices: Any Projection TV with a Convergence Amp board

If I knew which Mitsubishi Projection TV you're looking at, I could help quite a bit more. In general, the "convergence chips" on a typical Convergence Amplifier board are actually two STK's mounted to large heat sinks. "STK" is electrical engineering slang for "Convergence Amplifier Integrated Circuit".

Here's a helpful Solution archived at FixYa:

You'll see in the photo that the STK on the PC board actually have part numbers on them that begin with "STK".

What is STK ICs?

STK-series integrated circuits are amplifier IC's that are most often used in projection TV sets as convergence output amplifiers. When these or other convergence parts fail, the three color images no longer line up correctly on the screen.

Need more help on stk-392-110

Possible cause if generic chips were used. You can't use generic STK chips on this set they will blow, if not right away most likely within a month. I just did my friends set and spent 51.00 a piece for genuine Panasonic STK chips, didn't replace any other components and its fine. (I did have an unrelated issue with fluid but the set is fine now) I am not sure that is the problem your having but if you got cheap chips in the kit you bought, there is a chance they blew again. Also double check your solder connections make sure there isn't any bridging or cold solder joints. Did you use new heat sink grease (white paste)? Checking the voltage is good advice also. My advice is based on the assumption that you tried to fix the convergence through the convergence menu on the set and still couldn't get it. Let me know...

Denon 455

Typically amps do that for one of two reasons:
1. All the speakers arent connected proper
2. One or both of the amplifier output modules have failed.

I dont know if that model uses discrete transistors or STK type units.
Most of those parts are available off the shelf though

With the receiver off, press ENTER + ADVANCED SURROUND keys continuously for 2 sec. and it will tell you the fault it encountered. Even if it has a short, it will still protect the speakers; however, it is still a good idea to disconnect all speakers before doing this.
