Question about Canon Digital Rebel / EOS-300D Digital Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens

1 Answer

Auto focus mode

I'm reading the manual for my Digital Rebel. On pg. 123 it describes the AI Servo AF and AI Focus AF but I'm not understanding it. I'm not able to grasp the difference between the two or how you make the settings (assuming that I get it figured out). I can't find a description of this in the manual ? what am I missing? Thanks.

Re: Auto focus mode

One Shot AF will focus on something and stop the AF process. One Shot AF will not fire the shutter until the lens is in focus with something. This AF mode is available in some PIC modes, like Macro mode, I think. AI Servo AF will not lock the focus, and if the subject or the camera moves, the camera will continue to seek a sharp focus. Servo AF will allow the shutter to fire whether in focus on not. This is mode only available in the Sports PIC mode. AI Focus starts out in One Shot AF, but if it detects subject movement it switches to AI Servo. It does not switch back to One Shot unless you release the shutter button and start over. This mode is available in P, Tv, Av, M and probably some PIC modes. The DRebel defaults to the AI Focus in most modes but switches very easily into Servo. Much easier than any other EOS camera I've used. In fact, too easily for most people. For example if the camera locks focus and you them move the focus manually (only on lenses with FTM), or sometimes if you zoom, or even pan the camera; all of these can force the camera to switch to Servo when you don't really want it to. The Wasia (Russian) firmware hack can force the camera to stay in One Shot, but it can't force the camera to start out in Servo.

How can I make the focus ring work on my casio exilim ex f1?

The manual (pg 43) says that each time you press the FOCUS button, it will advance between Auto (AF), Macro (Flower), Infinity (Sideways 8) and Manual (MF). You can use the < or > keys to focus , or the ring if set up as described below:

Next, the focus ring can be programmed (pg 85) by pressing [REC] -> [MENU] -> [REC Tab] -> [Ring Setup]. Choose "CS fps" for Continuous Shutter Speed (pg 46), "Zoom" (pg 40), "Focus" (pg 43), or "Off" for no function at all.

You can download your manual here.

I f this was helpful, please rate it 4 thumbs up. Thanks!

Automatic mode is not working and the manual mode

The manual can be had from Nikon directly, here. The blurry results are probably due to an improper mode focus selection. Are you using a supported lens? A list of supported lenses is provided on pg. 157 of the manual, but this chart is easier to understand. Some lenses have an Auto / Manual focus selector switch. Some are shown as "A-M" or "A/M-M". Set an A-M switch to A or if A/M-M to A/M for Auto focus. Additionally, auto-focus is only supported on Nikon compatible lenses that bear the AF-S or the AF-I mark with built-in motors. If you've got a compatible lens attached, there may be a setting in the menu that is causing a problem. It will be far easier to simply reset the camera to factory default state than try to go through them all. See pages 119 & 124 for the Reset Shooting Options and Reset Setup Options procedure, and try shooting again.

Hopefully that will get you going.

AF not working

The first thing to do is make sure that the lens you purchased supports AF. If not that is the issue. If you have a lens that does support it then make sure in your camera settings you are either set on AI Servo or AI focus

Error 99 on screen cant take picture intermitant

Error 99 is known as Abnormal Mirror operation. Follow the link for help;EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: AF Accuracy Adjustment
EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: Abnormal Mirror Operation (Err 99)

It should be noted that the AF accuracy adjustment advisory is in addition to the previous EOS-1D Mark III AF mirror adjustment service notice. Free repairs are being offered for customers affected by the "Err 99" mirror problem, and Canon is also providing free AF accuracy checks and adjustments for customers experiencing problems with soft focus when using any but the central AF point.

Finally, Canon Japan has published a new manual entitled "EOS-1D Mark III AI Servo Auto Focus Manual" aimed at helping owners understand and get the most from their AF system.

Focus Problem with Canon EOS 350D

Not all of the lights are lit when in AF mode, there are different ways for AF to work and you should refer to your manual to understand how to set up/understand what it is doing. Camera manufacturers seem to make their customers believe that their camera is easy to use, and yet fill the thing with all of the technical stuff/gadgets which make it very difficult for a beginner to understand. Hope this is of some use!

Canon Rebel xti - auto focus problem

AI should be focusing. You really can't change many settings when you are shooting in auto mode. Is the lens in AF mode?

I'm sure you have long since returned from vacation!

Hope this helps!

Focus modes

There are four focus modes: S-AF (Single auto focus), C-AF (Continuous auto focus), MF (Manual Focus), and S-AF/MF (Simultaneous mode). (SINGLE Auto Focus): Focusing is performed once when the shutter button is pressed halfway. C-AF (CONTINUOUS Auto Focus): The camera repeats focusing while the shutter button is pressed halfway. (MANUAL FOCUS): The function allows you to manually focus on any subject while looking through the viewfinder. SIMULTANEOUS USE of S-AF mode and MF mode: You can fine-adjust focus manually by turning the focus ring after AF is performed in the S-AF mode.
