Samsung HLN467W Flashing "LAMP" LED

Thanks for your help. My HLN467W will not turn on. I can hear the relay inside the set turn on and the "LAMP" LED flashes (only status light flashing) and then I hear the relay switch off again after about 10 seconds. The Samsung website status light troubleshooting matrix does not have any option for just the "LAMP" LED light flashing. There are no Samsung techs in my area (Yokosuka, Japan) and Samsung phone only suggested trying a new bulb.

Exchanged lamp with no change. Where do I check the 300V? Is it 300V going from the power supply to the ballast?

  • anthony777 Sep 20, 2008

OK, found the 300V - have ~315V constant w/o load. Visual inspection of ballast board offered nothing but a coil that looked a little dark (in picture). Is there any way to test this in place, or will it have to be removed to test?

  • anthony777 Sep 20, 2008

Tested the coil in place. (no grounding or open on primary or secondary) All other components look ok - no scorching or discoloration.

    Guest,
I am sorry. I may not be much help. Do you have a flashing green light in front when you try to turn it on? And do you have clicks when you try to turn it on? Mine does and I have 300V at the ballast so I know the power supply is working.

  • anthony777 Sep 24, 2008

I do not hear the color wheel spin up or arcing. Just a click from what sounds like the power supply. Normally I have a 4-5 note chime when I turn it on, but I don't have that either. And still no one has been able to tell me what the flashing (twice) "lamp" light means. Thanks.

I start the TV and the center light flashes until the three of them do. I unplug the TV and try again several timesand finally works. It happens 40% of the times I try to watch TV.

  • Antonio Velazquez Jan 21, 2009

Same problem. But sometimes unpluging and pluging the TV set many times works.

  • robert304 Feb 28, 2009

I have a similar problem, When I bought my HLN467W used, It took about 30-45 seconds to have a picture and the lamp light continuously blinked, after awhile it began not having a picture and the 3 led's flashing, after replacing the lamp the tv worked fine again but still took 20-30 seconds to get a picture and lamp light blinked for the first few seconds. Now after only 15-20 hours on the new bulb, the tv turns on and works every blue moon the lamp light continually flashes, But now everything powers up except no picture, the lamp light flashes for a min then restarts the tv until all 3 led's flash upfront, I pulled everything apart to test the power supply and the DC power to the ballast is 385V, is this normal or too high? I have heard it is supposed to be 300VDC, but not sure if that is with a load or not. I have ordered a new ballast and power supply just in case. Any info or clarification is greatly appricated.

Remove the lamp and visually check if inside looks broken.if visually do not see any thing wrong, check if you have 300 volts dc supply on the ballast which starts the lamp.if you do then the ballast may be defective.if you do not then the power supply should be checked.
the lamp should always be tried first especially if is older than two years.
note - be aware about the switch at the door lamp.the door should be closed, otherwise tv will not work.if you remove the back cover, make sure to bypass the switch temporarely so you could work on the set.

Sorry I could not answer you sooner.

by having 315 volts means power supply ok.

next step is to check the ballast.do not judge by the color of the coil as you mentioned.

have someone stand at the front of the tv set so he could press power while you are in the back of the set.By staying in the back with open back cover and door switch bypassed, notice if you hear a starting noise (spark gap firing) from the ballast more than once till the lamp comes on.if you do hear it, then the ballast probably is good. if you do not hear any starting noise (spark gap firing) then you should replace the ballast.

note that the common parts replaced in DLP sets are the lamp and the ballast.

if the ballast is ok other possibility is the color wheel, fan,or DMD.

Color wheel - when color wheel is bad, usually makes lot of noise.you should hear the spinning of the color wheel very quietly soon after power on.if you do not hear the spinning of the color wheel then the color wheel could be defective.

the color wheel must start spinning before any other operation after power on.

color wheel is located on the right side by looking in the back.you will see circuit on the left side and optic block on the right side.Color wheel is located top-middle of the optic block. It is not visible unless you remove two screws then a plastic cover. you could removed carefully and check to see if pieces of glass are broken. If there is no broken glass and you hear no loud noise when it spins then the color wheel is good.

If the ballast is ok,color wheel ok,fans ok then DMD could be defective.DMD is a square incased circuit whitch is located right in front of the optic block and is very expensive.DMD rteplacement needs qualified technician because requires adjustment.

To summarise - after pressing power switch, the color wheel should spin first then the ballast should fire the lamp.

the door switch can be bypassed by moving it up and placing it put with a masking tape.DO NOT FORGET TO REMOVE THE MASKING TAPE WHEN REPAIR IS COMPLETE FOR SECURITY REASON.

Good luck and let me know if you need any more help.

I hear the fan almost non stop while the tv is on.

You have a bad color wheel. The color wheel is located in front of the lamp, as the light shines through it as it spins. It is made up of different colored segments of glass, and one of the segments has came loose and causing the vibrating humming noise. The reason I know it isn't a fan is because the fans will continue to run for about 30 seconds after the set is powered off. The click you hear is the relay cutting off the fans. The color wheel cuts off as soon as you press the power button to cut the set off. I've replaced many of these at our shop for the same problem.

Flashing "LAMP" bottom right side

Unplug the set from the wall. Next you will need to remove the Lamp Door on the right side of the set. Just one screw and you can remove the door. Next you will see the lamp inside. It has two gold colored screws. Loosen both screws and grab the handle and lightly wiggle side to side while pulling the lamp out. Warning!!! DO NOT TOUCH THE FRONT GLASS AT ALL on the old lamp and the new lamp. If you see shattered glass inside the lamp then you have a bad lamp. There will be a Lamp Code sticker on the left side of the set. Record the lamp Code and purchase a lamp. Once you have the correct lamp just reverse the process. Make sure you have the Lamp Door on correctly and the screw in or else the set will not come on.
