Question about Sharp Microwave Ovens

Have a sharp microwave model R-9H83 that all of a sudden sparks were coming out of the top where the metallic looking paper covered a hole in the top. Pulled it off, was very dirty and greasy, but was no help.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

You can probably find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number here at the Sears parts site.

The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

This is not good, the magnetron is arcing because metal is exposed, this will eventually destroy the magnetron making the oven useless. I strongly suggest it get looked at for safety and potential fire hazard.

I have a Model R-9H83 that I bought in 1992. It's been working like a top. Yesterday, all of a sudden, the unit doesn't power up. Dead to the world. I've looked for a fuse or CB but...

may be cracked solder connections on the circuit board itself. remove and check. of course, check the fuse and mag/oven cavity themos too.

Sparks are flying on almost everything I put in it. I put some chicken nuggets wrapped in paper towel like I always do and suddenly it started big spark looks like it is coming from a little square patch...

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

It may also be in the area of the turntable support, coupler, or motor.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If it will not come clean, the area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Home Depot.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

It is part number 86828 and you can order it by part number from the Pros here.

Paint damaged in side microwave oven

1) How is the cavity damaged? Is it just peeling paint, or is it rust? If it's rust then the microwave could be dangerous.

2) The antenna cap usually has a small hole in the centre, but if there are any other holes in it the magnetron itself could be damaged, and holes caused by the magnetrin arcing.

The part would be much cheaper if you get the Sharp version (these ovens are made by Sharp) instead of the Dacor branded part.

The model DMT2420 is essentially the same as model R440D / R540D.

The Sharp part number is PCOVPB085MRP0 (zero on the end) and you can order Sharp parts from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com
