Question about Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC

Cannot connect my Axim to my desktop.

I just received my Axim today, charged it up and I cannot seem to even get to the first partnership creation. Similar problem to many on this board; I followed all the instructions, but cannot get my Axim to successfully connect. Here's the process so far. 1. I pop the Axim in the cradle and see Activesync start up and here the "tune" sound from both desktop and Axim. 2. Wait 10-20 sec later; to hear the Axim disconnect "tune" and see that my desktop is still trying to communicate. 3. It thens drops "Not connected." OR I get an error window titled "Version Not Compatible" Msg: "Unable to connect to your mobile device. It is not compatible with the version of Microsoft ActiveSync currently installed on this desktop computer." I am running Activesync 3.6, with windows2K.

Re: Cannot connect my Axim to my desktop.

I don't have this problem with mine but judging from your post I think i know what it may be. The version of ActiveSync on the Dell CD is 3.5. You mentioned you have 3.6 installed, I know this sounds lame, but maybe the version of ActiveSync built into the PPC2002 ROM image on the Axim is not compatible with 3.6. In other words, you may be stuck having to go with 3.5 to avoid this problem.

Re: Cannot connect my Axim to my desktop.

The type of connection/usb/activesync problems throughout this forum (which is the tip of the iceberg - most people don't know about this forum or if they do, they are reticent to post) is not consistent with the state of the art of personal computing in the year 2002. The type of inconsistent, unexplained problems discussed here are not expected by two big companies like Microsoft and Dell. Dell's strategy has created a double-edged sword. It has opened up the pocketpc market to a much bigger audience by halving the price. But by bringing in many more people (probably ten times more) it has now exposed itself to the flaws of the system in numbers sufficient to not ignore. Either the Dell has a problem or the Microsoft Activesync has a problem. In the words of this industry, the connection between the pocketpc and the computer is not "robust". My SonyClie can connect with no problem. Why can't the Dell? Obviously the engineers at Dell and Microsoft need to put on their thinking caps to make this a no-brainer connection. We should not have to cross our fingers and stand on one foot for 5 seconds on Tuesday or whatever the latest guess is from the well-meaning but hopelessly overwhelmed moderators.

Re: Cannot connect my Axim to my desktop.

I have tried to initiate the partnership using Activesync with my new Axim on three different laptops, three different versions of windows operating systems including 2K. I've spent hours on the hold for support and have been very disappointed with the level of training on this product. Obviously, we are not the only customers have problems with the usb connection but if you call the help desk, they act like it's a surprise to them. I have downloaded the usb patch and that does not correct the problem. I've been told by the support staff that I will have to upgrade to XP. Well that's just great. I need to spend $99 to upgrade my laptop to use a $200 pda. There are posting from XP users having the same problem so I'm not inclined to run right out to Best Buy! If I don't get a resolution fast, my Axim is being returned to Dell.

Does not recognize my connection for active sync

Dell made an entry into the market of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) with Axim X5. The Dell Axim comprises of families of X5, X3, X30, X50 and X51. The Dell Axim PDA can be connected to the computer either by using a cradle or a sync cable. The sync cable connects the device to the computer directly. Here are the steps for connecting a Dell Axim to a computer using a sync cable.
  1. p 1 The Microsoft ActiveSync software must be installed in order to connect the PDA to the computer. This software is found in the Dell Axim Pocket PCmag-glass_10x10.gif Companion CD.
  2. Step 2 The Axim X51 PDA has a 36-pin connector, while the X3 has a 22-pin docking connector.
  3. Step 3 Connect the USB connector found at the end of the sync cable to the computer.
  4. Step 4 Check the PDA. If the PDA is not properly cabled to the computer, you will get the following message: “Connect your device to a computer using a sync cable or cradle before running the system update. Ensure that ActiveSync is installed on the computer and that the ActiveSync connection is successful.”
  5. Step 5 Ensure that the Dell logo faces upward.
  6. Step 6 Use the sync cable to set up a partnership, which can be done multiple times when you sign in as a guest.

Axim locked up

My first opinion would refer to the operating system stored in ROM. Maybe you have a ROM data corruption and you may need to upgrade/reinstall the OS and other files in ROM. As you can't make a connection with active sync (try it however) you will need to have the ROM updated via a specially formated SD card. This is risky to do it yourself as it involves hex editing and raw formating a SD card. If something is done wrong the process fails and the PDA could get damaged. Please go to a service center to have it fixed by them. It is the most safest way. If you however manage in some way to make an active sync connection with you pda (either a partnership or guest connection) you can try to upgrade the ROM yourself using the patch provided by Dell (this is a safe way). Here is a link to download a ROM installation file (english version, also it is Windows Mobile 5, it will also upgrade your operating system) http://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/R143808.EXE (this is an official upgrade from Dell, please follow the instruction in the program). For any other question please feel free to ask and also always remember to rate any answers received from this site :) Good luck !

Connecting Axim plus Palm on the Same PC

I may be wrong but each PDA (assuming you are connecting different brands) have different drivers. I connected a Toshiba and Dell PDA and each required their respective install disk with their respective drivers. Then I configured each pda using the Active Sync Connection Wizard. Everything ran smoothly after that.

Cannot copy files to the Axim

Try disconnecting your Axim from your PC, then open ActiveSync on your PC, and delete the partnership. Next, reconnect your Axim X5, and go through the connection wizard again, and create a new partnership.

Can't run software on dell computer

This sounds like an issue with your desktop. Something has got corrupted maybe. Try going to the cd driectly to install a program. It only needs internet explorer when it runs the menu for the cd. It can all be installed by finding the setup for the particualr program your installing. Might need to reinstall internet explorer on your desktop and if that doesn't help, I hate to say it but might need to reinstall windows on it. Are you using ME or XP? I had many problems with kernel32.dll errors with ME but have not had any problems at all with XP. Only way I ever fixed those errors with ME was to reinstall. ME was the least stable version of windows.

Restoring Backup to New Axim

The backup utility included on your Dell Handheld will backup your data to a storage card. You can restore on your replacement handheld from that storage card. From your Host PC, you can go to Tools | Backup/Restore and do a backup to the Host PC, and you can then restore after syncing the replacement handheld for the first time.

NO file transfers are working!

Try deleting the partnership in ActiveSync on the PC, and then create a new partnership. I saw this problem, when I connected the first time to a PC. I tried connecting to a second PC, and had no problem. When I went back to the first, it required that I create a new partnership, and no problem with the connection.

Two Axims on the same desktop computer

You can both do it, just not simultaneously - meaning don't sync at the same time. You can set up your own partnership with your own preferences. Using Outlook profiles or Windows XP/2000 user settings, you can even have your own Outlook database to sync against so you don't comingle data. Post back with your OS if you need help getting this set up.
