Question about Maytag MSD2732GR Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Icemaker My ice maker quit on me probably a year ago - obviously, not a big concern. However, recently I decided to try a repair. My first thought was that the water supply was insufficient (I had originally installed a saddle valve with a 3/8's line to the icemaker). I assumed that the puncture made by the needle valve wasn't allowing enough water to supply both water dispenser and ice maker. To that end, I replaced the needle valve with a 1/2" gate valve with a reducer to the 3/8's supply line. Apparently the increased water pressure overwhelmed the valve and I ended up with a freezer full of ice. Took forever to chip it out. I online and found out that a number of people were dealing with icemaker problems. Everything seemed to point to the dual water valve that distributes water to both units. So, I went ahead and replaced the valve. This did not change anything. Another giant ice cube. I have a sneaking suspicion that the increased water supply is at fault. I need help guys, it's taking forever to get to my frozen waffles.

I definitely appreciate the help. However, you must realize that my trade is carpentry - I know nothing about refrigeration. I need more specifics. As for "to on the side", I assume you're referring to the ice maker. My ice maker has nothing on the side of it. However, it does have a gear on the front. And this gear does have a screw in the center. Could this be the head you're referring to?

There's something else I wanted to bring up. In observing the operation of this ice maker, I noticed that the ice cube tray itself does not fill up and consequently never produces ice. Is it possible that the problem is nothing more than a fill tube alignment? Kind of hard to say as I can't see the exact positions of either fill tube or tray. Another thing, in an effort to try and see the position of the fill tube, I pulled out the ice receptacle unit. I noticed that the ice cube tray assembly was partially torn away from the plastic side wall - causing it to lean down to the side somewhat. I tried propping it up, but the outcome was still the same - no water in the tray, but down into the rest of the freezer.

Well, as I stated last Sept., this wasn't a big issue with me. So here it is six months later and I finally got around to looking into your idea of a misaligned fill tube, and I'll be damnned if that wasn't the problem. A half hour after I closed the door this thing is kicking out ice cubes like nobody's business. Plus, no more glaciers to chip out of the freezer! Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help.

Water dispenses fine through the front door, but no ice cubes get made; metal ice detector switch clicks up and down like it should, but no ice is prodced in either position.

It's a Maytag side by side Model MSD2651HES

There is a water fill adjustment on your ice maker the normal fill time is 7.5 seconds...

the adjustment screw is on the side and in the middle of the head..
•Turning the water level adjustment screw
will move the contact in its relationship with
the contact ring segment. This causes the
contact to vary the time that the water valve
is energized since the contact ring is tapered
at the end of the fill time.
•Turning the knob or screw clockwise
decreases fill - counterclockwise increases
the fill amount.
• Only one revolution is possible with the
cover on, due to a stop molded on cover
360o will affect fill by 40cc - 180o varies
the fill by 20cc.

•if you need more adjustmnet remove cover

• Further adjustment could damage

Hope it help please let me know if it does...

Sorry I thought it was a over fill problem..the fill adjustment meters how long the water valve is open.

But sounds like you have a missing fill cup or misaligned cup

the fill tube should pour water into a white plastic cup (square) at the far in of the icemaker..

the ice maker should have two 1/4" screws that mount it to the wall of the freezer. and one 1/4" screw that holds the bottom...if its not level it will spill all the water out...let me know if this helps

Sounds like the fill tube at the ice maker is either out of alignment or has a crack in it.

The water supply line from the water inlet valve enters the rear of the freezer and releases the water into a large diameter fill tube. The fill tubes hangs above the fill cup which funnels the water into the ice mold. If the fill tube and fill cup are improperly aligned, water may spill out instead of going into the mold.

Ice machine isn't working

Two things come to mind.

First, the water valve at the bottom rear of the refrigerator may have failed. You didn't mention if there is a water dispenser and whether or not this is still working. This valve pumps water to the icemaker and water dispenser when the control unit of the icemaker calls for water. Also, there could be a blockage in the line which brings the water to the icemaker.

The other possibility is that the part of the icemaker controls which calls for water from the valve has failed. If this has happened, it would likely be more cost effective to replace the icemaker unit.

I decided maybe we were fixated on the ice maker because it's the obvious culprit/source of water input. However, thought more broadly and then fixated on the frost-free aspect and the drip pan. In case ice was building up and defrosting within the refrigerator back, even though the pan was bone dry, I removed 1/3 of the freezer contents to another freezer to maximize air circulation in the freezer compartment. At the 24-hr mark, after this change, there was an approximate 2 tablespoon drip downstairs so I don't consider the problem fixed necessarily. The next 24-hour period is late this afternoon. However, I still empty the ice cube bin so it will never stop making ice in case it is the pressure of the water in the line which, when no ice is made because the bin is full, it leaks where the line comes into the back of the fridge, but out of sight, until it pools on the floor enough to run through to the floor below, downstairs.

Thank you for contacting me. I'm telling others about your site.

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

Ice maker stopped dropping ice or even making ice.

Try using a hair dryer to thaw out the rubber tubing leading to the ice tray. On mine, I opened up the front door to the icemaker and found the rubber tubing leading in. I squeazed it, it felt frozen, so I applied heat. Water began dripping out, the area thawed, and I had ice again within a short period of time.

I have a 13 year old refrigerator with an icemaker. I installed a water line to get water to the fridge. The hose is connected to the water main and the fridge. I am not getting any ice.

Obviously, your ice maker problem could be any number of things... Now that you have water to the ice maker, is the inlet valve opening to allow water to get to the ice maker itself? If it is, is the line that runs between the inlet valve free to allow water to get to the ice maker? if it is, is the ice maker cycling ( meaning the motor rotates the drive mechanism that times the cycle of opening the valve, rotating the mold tray then releasing the ice with a small mold release heater? An ice maker that's ~ 13 years old probably has a removable front cover so that you can see the drive gears.. Also, is the lever that senses the ice cube bin is over full in a position ( normally down) that allows th eice cube maker to cycle? Hopefully, these simple checks will help you trouble shoot the problem and get your icemaker functioning again. Hope this helps !
