Question about Canon GL2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Open Question

Using Clearscan function on GL2

Hello,
I am recording live music where stage lighting has a faint flicker. I assume they are fluorescent.
I followed my GL2 instructions to take the exposure out of auto, and either use it in Manual or Shutter priority.
However, when I enter the menu to select the proper frequency, the Clearscan function is still not available.
What am I missing to be able to use this feature. Any help would greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
William

Hi, how long have you had your camcorder? my reason for asking is that i have the same model, and recently had to send it back to Canon who were recalling camcorders with image problems as there were a batch of faulty CCD cards Good luck

Do you have the dial set to either P, Tv, Av, M or A-DEP? It will only work in those modes, and will probably only be in the camera icon menu when the camera is set to one of those modes.
Hope that helps.

yes, I found the manual downloads on Canon's webpage. I wish I could figure out how to transfer my tape videos to a computer. I bought the $50,00 DV-1394 cord and nothing happens--computer doesn't recognize the camera.

My fluorescent shop light fixtures sometimes does not go on and sometimes the bulbs just flicker without giving much light. What's wrong?

If your shop is in your garage, and it is cold outside, the two-pin fluorescent tubes don't work very well. Garage lighting (fluorescent) should be the HO (high output) type. It operates on the same voltage. The tubes are not interchangeable. You need a HO fixture. If your shop is inside your house, then flickering tubes (assuming that you tried changing them out with new ones) indicate a bad ballast inside the fixture. You can either change out the ballast, or for almost the same price, replace the fixture.

Lutron s-600 don't seem to function

That switch says on it that it is for fluorescent lights only. I don't know if you can use compact fluorescent bulbs on that system, perhaps verify if you can or not. The switch has electronics in it and may need that ground wire to get 120 volts to operate. If you have incondescent light bulbs return and get the correct dimmer.

If the acer 5532 has a microphone - where is it and how does it work. Is it possible to record live music?

Hi there.

The 5532 should have a microphone as it has a webcam in it. If not there is a microphone jack at the left side of it.

If you want to test your microphone there is an application called sound recorder. It is located in Start - all programs - accessories.

You can change the properties for the microphone if you right click on your speaker icon at the bottom right of your task bar (bottom right of the screen) and click on recording devices. This is assuming your computer has Windows 7 which I think it does. In this screen it will show all connected devices you can use for recording.

A recording application you can try is called Audacity. You will need to google it. It is a music recording program that is free. It isn't the easiest to use though. If you want to record live music you can use the sound recorder to record it as well.

If you have any other questions leave a comment and I can get back to you.

No DV output from Canon GL2. Using a firewire cable from DV port on camera to firewire port on Mac Pro tower. Attempting to import the camera live to Final Cut Pro. Previously worked just fine.

Was the tape your trying to import recorded on the camera you are trying to import from? I've noticed that sometimes the tape I recorded on my old Panasonic won't show up on my GL2. It's like it's a blank tape, but I know it's not, as I have it labeled. Stick it back into the panasonic and it plays fine.

Flickering monitor

Flickering screen display

Flickering on the screen can be caused by defective hardware in the computer or by improperly installed software, but it can also be caused by interference from external devices. The following examples describe situations in which your screen could start flickering:
  • Screen starts flickering because of interference caused by devices which generate magnetic fields, for instance:
    • a TV set
    • a laser printer
    • another monitor
    • fluorescent lights
    • hidden power lines
  • Apart from interference, an incorrect setting in your system CMOS setup can also cause flickering. On some systems it is possible to distinguish between interlaced and non-interlaced monitors. The setup of your system should always be colour non-interlaced.
  • Proximity to the monitor of fans, air-conditioning units or other devices with rotating motors.
  • The number of devices using power from the same electrical line. Are you overloading the plug?
  • Monitor placed on an unstable surface.
  • Improper video drivers, this is a software problem, see section B
  • An improperly configured or a defective video card.

Recording w mic

Hi on1site
Something you may have to try.
if the unit has level controls for gain, sometimes, you can get enough gain through the standard stages to record, particularly if the music is LOUD:). Record live to tape, drop it into a computer and run a compressor over it to pull the gain up to a decent level. Use the best mics you have is also another tip to good recording.

Fluorescent light that keeps flickering

The ballast is a device that utilises and expanding/contracting electromagnetic field to create the high voltage which is needed to run fluorescent lights.

It is normally found behind the front cover or reflector part of the fitting and looks like a small box.

Replacement should normally be done by a person qualified in this field.
