Question about Computers & Internet
I think the problem is with the ATI Video drivers. I had the same problem and I went to the ATI site and updated my drivers and the problem has not occurred since. Mine was ATI radeon x1250. Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The graphics card is integrated on the mother board.

It is definitely the cr2032 battery for the CMOS this Extensa 4420-5963 when powered on you could gear the Hard drive spin then it powered down popped off Ram cover reseated powered it back up the time was 2006 . I replaced cr2032 and its all better now 3 days up and down! yeah

The problem is not with the graphics card it is most likely with the cmos battery socket. The battery is loose and that is why it may come one at one time but not at another time. And that may be why you don't see any bios splash screen. picksix's problem sounds the most similar to mine. I just opened it up and taped down the battery with some paper or anything non conductive that can add some pressure onto the battery and keep it in place.
