My Acer extensa 4420 can't start anymore.... when I press the power button.... it seems like it starts searching for the hard drive... I have no video.... no sound.... nothing.... and then, it restarts alone. I guess he tries again.... but it shut down after the second try.

I have the same exact problem. Does anyone have a solution?

  • cemons Sep 13, 2008

I have the same problem as well, I bought My laptop the other day. It started fine out of the box. I initialized windows and used it for a couple of hours. I also updated vista with all the recommended updates. I went to restart the computer to install the updates and the machine tried to power up, restarted then shut down. I trid the power button several times until it finally started. On startup I got the screen that said windows was not shut down properly. I booted as normal and the system started fine. I have been having this problem intermittently since. I am unsure whether this is a hardware or software(windows) problem.

Have brand new Acer Extensa 4420; purchased 4 days ago. Out of the box it was fine; started right up. Now whenever it hibernates or shuts down, it is does not want to restart. Acts likes it tries and then quits trying and shuts down after a few seconds. Have to do a power reset every time I want to boot up. Very frustrating.

    the same problem!

All of a sudden my Acer Extensa 4420 just powered off. Each time I pushed the power button to restart, it would start then stop in 2 seconds. So far I have not gotten it to start again. What is a power start up.

I have the same problem. Mine never worked out of the box. I can't get it to boot up even once to replace any drivers.

On the acer web site it says to remove the power cord and to take out the battery. Then hold down the power button for 15 to 20 secs. Put in the power cord and turn it on.
If that does not work. Take out the cord again. Put in the battery and plug it back in again and turn it on.

That does not work for me.

I sent mine back to Acer, apparently they are having a huge problem because the motherboard is backordered and I've seen several people with the exact same problem.

  • picksix Nov 28, 2008

Same problem! I bought mine less than a month ago and it was fine until today. Went to start it up and some lights flickered for a few seconds then it just shut down. No splash screen screen, nothing. Tried the Support Desk solution they have at acer online but it didn't work. I'm very upset because I'm seeing many others with this problem and I'm not hearing very encouraging things about Acer Support. I researched this unit before I bought it and it had rave reviews but I guess we all got duds???? Luckily it's still under warranty but I'm afraid the problem will just keep recurring and once it's out of warranty I'll be screwed.

Same type of problems. With the power cord plugged in, sometimes it will start to boot and then shut down. Take out the power cord and I have a 50/50 chance it will boot. Will someone from Acer post something about this problem?

  • iura May 11, 2010

I have the same problem too!!! Im from Brazil like IVANBASTOS and bought the notebook at the USA in AUGUST 2008 . We don't have acer support here, i think its a serial problem with this acer 4420 series. The notebook dont start anymore now, ACER NEVER MORE!

I think the problem is with the ATI Video drivers. I had the same problem and I went to the ATI site and updated my drivers and the problem has not occurred since. Mine was ATI radeon x1250. Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The graphics card is integrated on the mother board.

It is definitely the cr2032 battery for the CMOS this Extensa 4420-5963 when powered on you could gear the Hard drive spin then it powered down popped off Ram cover reseated powered it back up the time was 2006 . I replaced cr2032 and its all better now 3 days up and down! yeah

I have tried everything to get my extensa to work. At one point I was ready to ebay it for spare parts. However through trial and error found that the CMOS battery was one of the problems. I used duct tape folded together to secure the battery in place - not to tape it down but as a spacer between top of battery and the laptop cover. I can verify that this works. Machine now boots everytime. Unfortunately the screen would still go blank after the laptop booted - sometimes right away other times it would be okay all day before going blank. I ended up loosening the screws to the heatsink and the laptop has been running great. It has been up and running for a couple days now without any blank screens.

The problem is not with the graphics card it is most likely with the cmos battery socket. The battery is loose and that is why it may come one at one time but not at another time. And that may be why you don't see any bios splash screen. picksix's problem sounds the most similar to mine. I just opened it up and taped down the battery with some paper or anything non conductive that can add some pressure onto the battery and keep it in place.

The big question is how do you get to the battery? I don't see it from the bottom.
Do you have to get under the keyboard and how do you do that?

I have an acer extensa 2305wlmi....i have 3 discs how do i reformat my computer backto factory one says disc1 bootable the others say disc1 and disc 2

The disc1 bootable will be the one you start with. Place the disc in the drive and then power on the computer. If the computer doesn't boot from that disc and instead boots to the old operating system, you'll need to get into the BIOS and make sure that the CD/DVD drive is set to bootable and that the priority is set higher than the hard drive.

Cant get acers signalup after a reformat to work now, i have extensa 4420 with vista and service pack 1

As far as I know, reformatting will erase a hard drive. Vista would not let you do this when it is running. So were you trying to reinstall Vista when this happened? Microsoft only wants you to install your Vista disc one time on one computer. So that may relate to the problems you are having. I would contact: Microsoft Corp. c/o Bill Gates, Redmond WA.

My cd/dvd player is unplugged on my acer extensa 4420....How do i fix this problem

try these if your computer cannot see the dvd rom and if theres a yellow exclamation point on the device manager 1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
