When it's booting up press F8 continually until you get the safe mode menu and select last known good configuration, and then press enter for a reboot

When I turn the netbook on, I get a black screen with a small white line blinking in the top left. None of the keys do anything when pressed.

This means on or more of your windows system files has failed. Try to revert back to the last known good configuration. To do this, just reboot the netbook then upon rebooting press F8 couple of times. it will take you to the Advanced screen. Select "Last known good configuration" then press enter. The netbook will reboot again and hopefully would get you into windows.

Please let me know if this works so i can povide other options if i doesnt.

Thank you for using Fixya.

The resolution was changed on the computer and i need to know how to switch it back before windows loads

When windows loads right-click on the desktop and select properties. From properties select settings and there is a slide to adjust the resolution near the bottom of the screen.
Alternatively you could try tapping F8 as the system opens and use 'last known good configuration' from the menu

I reboot and The black windows screen works and then a blue screen turns on and just stays there. It says" Microsoft Windows XP

try booting into safe mode:

start up your system and tap on the F8 key.

This may allow you to get into windows and see what the problem is.

click Start-> Run -> type MSCONFIG

in the system configuration window you can disable all startup items and services, restart the PC and see if it works normally.

Then you can turn on a few at a time to find out if something is gumming up your system.

Hello! I've got a LG LW40 Express Laptop. Whenever I turn it on, a black screen apologizing for inconvenience is what I see. It says that Windows didn't start successfully because of a software or hardware...

Take the hard driver out & put it back in, push it in nice & *** so that the pins go all the way in.
start it up & go into the BIOS witch should either F2,F8,Esc or Del.if you can't see the bios option
at the start it will appear as F8 or something like that in the list you keep getting.
Or just keep tapping F2 when you first switch it on.
In the BIOS go to exit then select LOAD SYSTEM DEFAULTS hit enter then go to the BOOT list & put them in this order if their not all ready done.......
it tells you how to change the values @ the bottom of the screen.
Go back to EXIT & make sure you SAVE CHANGES & EXIT.
It will reboot then select start windows normally.......JOBS A GOOD ONE!
if not bell me on my land line it's free land line to land line with BT & we'll try something else........GOOD LUCK.

My HP Notebook first showed a black screen and then after a hard shutdown and restart it only shows a black screen with colored lines. It seems that it is starting up even though I can't see the screen.

Try this,Start in VGA mode.Once started, update your video drivers

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Safe Boot options loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
  • Safe Mode (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.
  • Safe Mode with Networking (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Network): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows together with the drivers that you must have to load networking.
  • Safe Mode with Command Prompt (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal(AlternateShell)): This option is the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe starts instead of Windows Explorer.
  • Enable VGA Mode: This option starts Windows in 640 x 480 mode by using the current video driver (not Vga.sys). This mode is useful if the display is configured for a setting that the monitor cannot display.
Please rate this a fixa

Problem restarting, "press r"

  1. Start the laptop
  2. when the logo screen turns black start pressing F8 a few times.
  3. A Windows Boot Options screen should show on the screen
  4. If you see the Windows Logo (the normal thing when Windows loads, then press reset and try again
  5. At the Windows Boot Options screen select "Last known good configuration" and press Enter twice
It "should" now load normally, if not then..
  1. Replace step 5 above with "Safe Mode" and see if that loads all the way through. If so, then restart and see if its OK now.
If not, then post back with any error messages and we can look at something else.
