Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Scratched control panel

The plastic that covers my control panel is all scratched. Does anyone know how to replace just the plastic? I spoke to GE and it only comes as the control panel assembly which is $110-200 to replace depending on where you look.

You might try a local appliance repair shop to see if they have any used microwaves that they are scrapping for parts... Ask around at a few appliance repair shops.. you may be surprised and find one.. Good luck..

How do i replace smh9207st buttons

If you mean the 4 silver buttons on the lower right of the unit controlling the lite and fan, then see the instructions below...However, if you mean the control panel buttons in the door surrounding the clock display, then you and I are in the same boat. But I digress...

0. UNPLUG THE UNIT
1. Remove the grill atop the unit, 2 phillips screws. Gently slide the grill to the left to unhook it from the unit. This reveals the screw holding the right side cover.
2. Remove the screw holding the cover in place; you can now pull it away from the unit. You must disconnect the wires/plugs from the back. Take a photo for reference. One plug will remain: this belongs to the buttons in question.
3. Set it on a soft cloth to prevent scratching. Remove the screws holding the circuit board in place and the remaining plug; remove the board, then remove the metal tray/box underneath the board.
4. The PCB with the buttons is now visible. There are tabs holding it in place; gently pry them off and the board, a thin plastic shield and the buttons should come free.

Now you can clean/replace the buttons and/or the membrane buttons. Reassemble in reverse.

Cleaning tip: Scrubbing bubbles works great for cleaning icky kitchen grease, although it can leave a film (but it gets the grease!). Follow up with windex (but use a windex-dampened paper towel on plastic to prevent scratching)

I've got a badly scratched touchpad membrance from abrasive sponge - lesson learned the hard way. Anyways, how do I replace the touch pad membrane on a Kenmore Microwave Model # 721.80049700? I&

I am not familiar with that specific model but typically touch pads either come as an assembly or as just the membrane that has a peel off paper on the back that covers a sticky layer that sticks onto the metal frame inside your unit. If that is the case, you have to remove the old touch pad and take a screw driver or a knife and start at one end and lift it off of the frame, once peeled off, clean the metal frame with laquer thinner to remove the old adhesive, make sure it is dried completely and then take off the protective paper of the new pad and stick it to the frame. If it is a plastic frame you CANNOT use a solvent like laquer thinner as it will melt the plastic frame and destroy it. On those I tend to just drag a razor blade across the surface until I feel it is clean enough to mount the new one. You could use alcohol to clean it. Or possibly mineral spirits. You jsut want it to be perfectly clean and grease free

We have a GE Oven Model JKP70W where the cover on the control panel came off. Can one replace just the cover for the control panel or the entire control panel?

Call GE - 866-622-6184
There is a campaign to replace that part as they are defective.
They will send you the part for free, but charge you $200 to install it. The install is not too hard. Make sure you power off the oven when you do it. Instructions are included.

How do I remove crazy glue from control panel? The cover over the plus control(to raise oven temperature) was coming off so I thought I would glue it back on! Bad idea ....now that control remains...

Not to much can repair / remove the crazy type glues once they are applied to plastics and plastic overlays. Some people attemp to use these not knowing that some types of plastic will not bond. most of the solvents that can desolve the glues will also damage the panels.

Is it possible to restore the teflon surface of teflon coated pans on which the surface has become scratched (in this case Jamie Oliver Tefal Frying pans)

No. There is no effective repair procedure for the pan once the teflon coating has become scratched down to the bare metal or begins peeling off.

You can continue to use the pan safely, but the non-stick surface will not be as effective as an undamaged coating would be.

Never use metal forks / spatulas / utensils on a teflon coated pan.

Instead try using thermal rated plastic, teflon, or wooden spatulas which will not scratch the pan coatings.

Good luck.

GE JVM1190WY 003 Microwave Convection sparks

The problem that you are having is that the magnetron inside the microwave is shorting out to ground and it will find the shortest path to reach whatever has metal in it. Replacing the magnetron will solve your problem altogether and you need not do anything else different and continue using your metal racks.

Keypad buttons fail

I always recommend that you use the hood / vent fan whenever cooking on the stove top. That can help keep steam out of the controls.

Also, I always recommend that users spray cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

I recommend a soft cloth since paper towels can scratch the plastic.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Thereshould also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind thecontrol panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which isvery helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you would like to have us do this for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
