Running WinXP Pro SP3 - Rio Carbon shows up as hardware under Windows Portable Devices but not under USB Controllers. Also does not appear as a hard disk or portable device in Control Panel or Explorer. How can I get the PC to recognize and work with it?

windows says it no longer supports my s35s rio mp3. Windows says device firmware is not compatible with WMP. WWW says to install RIO firmware 184 then 203 to device. Did it. WMP continues no support. W says to roll back to WMP 10. Danger? WMP was auto updated to WMP 11 earlier which caused my problem?

I have an old Rio Riot. The problem is I had it packed away for a couple of years. Now when I turn it on it states battery is low. I have installed the new firmware and hit/held reset and it still says battery is low. Is this solely a battery issue? I am not interested in installing a new hard drive.
