Small Engine Carburetor Adjustment

This Tip is for the Weed Eater/Trimmer, Leaf Blower, type carburetors. Adjusting a Small Engine Carburetor isn't as difficult as you might think.

As a general rule, it's always best to start at 1 1/2 turns for each adjusting screw.

Screw them all the way in, turning them clockwise until snug. (DO NOT tighten them down like a normal screw!) If your adjusting screws have the plastic regulators over them, the will pull off with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Then back them both out counter-clockwise 1 1/2 turns. This will get you in the ball park. Try to start your machine at this point. (If it doesn't start, turn both screws in, counter- clockwise, 1/4 of a turn. Continue this process until you get all the way to 3 full turns on each adjusting screw. If it still doesn't start, then you have bigger problems and you will need to check out a couple more of my Tips before you can go any further.) If it does start, then you are ready to move on.

If it does start, then you are ready to move on.

You should first, adjust the High screw, 1/4 turn(s) in or out, as needed. After you have adjusted the H screw, then adjust the Low screw in the same manner.

Your final adjustment should be the idle screw, which adjusts....you guessed it, the idle...lol. The Idle screw is usually larger than the H/L screws.

Good Luck!

I will do my best to answer your questions about drywall finishing. However, it would be best if we could speak on the PHONE or do a live CHAT. I can answer any question you have if it involves getting a wall ready for paint!

poulan leaf blower won't start

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner.Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should be able to see daylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance on:
1. Fuel line replacement or
2. Carburetor kit replacement

Just let me know.

The leaf blower won't start and I did change the spark plug and last time it run for like 30 sec. before it shut down again.

Main cause of small gasoline engine failure is carburetor clogged. Try spraying carburetor cleaner into carburetor and intake. Check if unit has air cleaner. If engine starts briefly with cleaner then carburetor needs manual cleaning. Carburetor removal and overhaul.
