Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

What the problem could be when your freezer works but ref. section is warm

Do you see frost built up on back wall of freezer?( what happens when it does not defrost is ice build up in the freezer and blocks cold air from flowing into the fresh food compartment) if so it is not defrosting, and this is what needs to be checked, remove back wall of freezer and check these;
Defrost heater-- it usually is at bottom of the evap. coil, to check it remove wires to it ,use a meter set to the lowest ohms setting and check for somewhere between 10-50 ohms if that is what yours, is its good, if meter reads OL replace defrost heater

Defrost thermostat-- it clips to the top of the evap. coil and is metallic, round , about the diameter of a quarter with a plastic side with 2 wires coming from it(do not confuse it w.thermister),remove wires and check for ZERO ohms WHEN TESTING IT MUST BE COLD so check it when frost is built up,IF meter reading is OL (WHEN COLD) its the problem

Defrost timer or defrost control if has digital display to show tempature
check timer(it could be anywhere except in freezer) by turning till you hear a click, the defrost heater should come on within 5 minutes if the heater does come on the timer is the problem and needs to be replaced,if the heater does not come on the above mentions parts (heater/t-stat) will be the problem.
defrost control is hard for unskilled lay persons to check SO IF heater and defrost t-stat are good replace control

Hope this helps you to figure out what is wrong with your refrigerator,
Gene

FRT221RSH refrigerator warm...freezer cold...some frost on back of freezer wall, i popped off the small cover on the inside back wall of the freezer and the fan there is running...i vacuumed a little dust underneath the refrig...now what should i do??

If you remove the entire back panel of the freezer section there is a evaporator (aluminum grill looks like a car radiator, contains r-134a, do not puncture or unit is ruined) Some frost on back freezer wall, means probably this entire grill is encased in frost, not allowing any air flow, which is how the entire refrigerator section is cooled, by air flow) The frost build up has to be removed,(got a hair dryer) you can unplug it for a couple of hours with the door open, overnight is better, this would fix the problem for a couple of weeks....Your automatic defrost is not working, there are three parts- the timer or control board, a heating element, and a bi-metal thermostat(often the problem)

You popped off the cover for the ice maker, you need to defrost the whole freezer section behind the back panel. Freezer cold means your compressor and freon are fine, you have a defrost problem with ice build up restricting air flow. A normal automatic defrost runs every 8 hours, three times a day, rule of thumb.....Sounds like you have a couple of weeks built up...........
hope this helps

refrig not cold enough, ice buildup on banck panel of freezer

ice build up means your refrigerator is not going through defrost cycle. you have ice build up on evaporator which restricts your cold air flow into the fresh food side. check defrost timer, defrost thermostat located on evaporator behind the wall where your getting frost. check defrost heater. it wraps under the evap.

refrigerator is barley cold, still makes ice, condensation inside of frostless freezer

Hi: The fact that it still makes ice tells me the freezer is a zero degrees. When you said condensation in the freezer did you mean frost? If your defrost heater fails it will cause the frost free freezer to build up frost. The frost will build up and block the vent that supplies the cold air to the fresh food. The defrost heater is behind the metal wall at the back of the freezer, at the very bottom. A glass tube with a metal coil in it. The coil can break and stop the defrosting. Replace that. Use a hair dryer to melt the frost from behind the panel. All of it top to bottom. You need to remove all the frost to free up the airways. I hope this helps, Jeff

If the frost is on the back wall of the freezer then you most likely have a defrost problem or a bad evaporator fan motor.

frig not cold but freezer is ice maker not making much ice either

Is your fan blowing in the freezer? Frost on the back wall of the freezer usually indicates a defrost problem... defrost themostate, heaters, take back panel off and check evap for frost build up and if your fan in working.
