Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

MediaMonkey Learn how to recognize an iPod Touch

As one of the desktop media players available today as an alternative to iTunes, MediaMonkey lets you transfer music, videos and other content to manage their iPod devices including the iPod Touch. However, MediaMonkey does not come installed with all drivers and other software components needed to recognize the iPod Touch. Therefore, you need the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer if you use your iPod Touch with MediaMonkey.

1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer. The software, available free from Apple's site contains the software components needed for a program on your computer, including MediaMonkey, to recognize the iPod Touch. You do not have to keep iTunes open while using the iPod Touch with MediaMonkey, but you should have downloaded and installed the program.

2. Connect the iPod Touch to your computer using the USB cable machine white. Close iTunes, since that opens up when you do this.

3. Release of MediaMonkey. Scroll down the browser on the left and note that the iPod Touch now appears in My Computer.

copy music from Ipod

You've got a new computer. All your music and videos are on your iPod and you'd like to populate you new iTunes library from it. Unfortunately iTunes doesn't let you transfer anything other than your iTunes store purchases from your iPod.

To transfer all your iPod content, all your music, playlists, videos, podcasts and photos to your new iTunes library you will need to download software like TouchCopy.

Here is how to use TouchCopy

1. Download and Install TouchCopy from http://www.touchcopy.com. Downloads are free and are available for both PC and Mac.
2. Start up TouchCopy by double-clicking the TouchCopy icon on your desktop.
3. Connect your iPod or iPhone to your computer. TouchCopy may start iTunes - don't worry, TouchCopy has fixed it so that iTunes will not sync music or video with your iPod while TouchCopy is running. These changes are restored when you quit TouchCopy.
4. Select which songs you want to copy into iTunes, if you want to select all your music, select "Music" from the list on the left and click on "Copy to iTunes" button in the TouchCopy control bar.

In a similar way, you can also use TouchCopy to copy your playlists, videos, podcasts, photos, contacts, calendars, notes and iPhone SMS.

When you are satisfied that all your iPod content is safely in iTunes, use iTunes to re-sync your iPod which will enable you to add new content to it.

Here is the info from Sony:
Is it possible to drag and drop music from the Apple® iTunes® software to the portable player using the Content Transfer Application? Solution
sp.gif sp.gif Yes, if you have iTunes software installed, you can transfer music and playlists from iTunes software to the Walkman® player by dragging and then dropping the files to the Content Transfer application.
NOTES:
  • The Content Transfer application supports data transfer from iTunes software 7.6 or 7.7 to the Walkman player.
  • The Content Transfer application supports data transfer from iTunes software 8.0. However, for playlist transfer from iTunes software 8.0 to the Walkman player, make sure you are using the latest version of the Content Transfer application. The latest version can be downloaded from the Sony Support Web Site at http://esupport.sony.com
  • Digital Rights Management (DRM) copyright-protected files are not supported. iTunes music files may be able to be upgraded to iTunes Plus music files, which do not contain DRM.
  • Do not disconnect the USB connection during data transfer.
  • If there is insufficient free space on the portable player, the data cannot be transferred.
  • The Content Transfer application is included with most newer Walkman Video players. It also is available for additional models in the NWZ-A, NWZ-E, and NWZ-S series. Some models may require an update to be compatible. Additional model-specific information can be found in the Drivers & Software section of the Sony Support Web Site at http://esupport.sony.com.
