Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet
Successful Postings - A guide to receiving faster and accurate information to your questions.
Welcome to FixYa. This site is dedicated to providing information and answers to questions submitted by you. But to do this well, there are a few points that should be considered.
Have you posted your question in the proper section? The experts here are not experts in every area, as a result they filter all incoming questions by category. If the question is regarding a "Pool Filter", chances are slim that a response will occur if you have the question posted in "Chain Saws".
Is your item correctly identified? This can cause confusion, as many items are known by similar names. If you own a portable lathe, you may receive less then accurate information if you call it a shop lathe. While both are indeed for a shop, one is quite different from another in its construction.
Have you duplicated the model/serial numbers accurately? This may not seem like a very important item, but it can make a huge difference for a search parameter. A computer recognizes dashes and slashes as characters in a search listing. In this example: G1-77-9A8-99 there may only 9 letters and numbers, there are thirteen characters that a computer will be looking for. For that matter... Have you included the model/serial numbers?
Have you outlined your issue clearly? While we do not need to know what time of day you tried to start your lawnmower, but it is helpful to know any other actions performed leading up to the issue. If you rebuilt the air intake - tell us. This point applies to all problems. The more details we get, the more likely it will be that we can assist you.
Restate the item in question. "Need owner's manual" This is a statement seen regularly here. It is a valid question/need...and it may be posted in the correct section, but sometimes the sub-category may be incorrect. If you need a manual for a specific item, use that item's name in the sentence.
Have you checked your spelling? This is more of a courtesy then anything, but when your serial number is underlined in red - you may see that you actually entered it in wrong. Also, there are items called by names with unusual spellings. If a large number of errors occur in your posting, we may believe that the item's name was miss-spelled as well... the unfortunate result may be that your question goes unanswered.
Have you read the site requirements and/or FAQ's? Most (if not all) of this is posted in those two areas, along with a number of other helpful hints and ideas. We realize that not everyone wants to spend their time reading directions all the time, but knowing the details can only help you in the end.
The issues and questions you pose to us are important enough to you that you are looking for an answer. The same issues and questions are important to us as well - if they weren't we wouldn't be doing this at all, as most of us are volunteers. The above may seem like common knowledge, but I assure you - many postings are vague, illegible, or simply lost in the wrong section. As a result they go unanswered. A little diligence goes a long way to helping you obtain the information you need, and in the end helps us to help you.
