Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

My system says I'm connected to the network, but I get "Page Cannot Be Displayed" in my browser

  1. See if you can boot to safe mode with networking (F8 at boot, if you get an operating system choice, press enter then F8) and see if you can access the internet. (This works for Wired network connections and most WIRELESS connections in WINDOWS 7) If you can, go to HTTP://WWW.DOWNLOAD.COM and download Malwarebytes. It will install from the safe mode and you can run it from the safe mode. Have it do a full scan then reboot to the normal mode after any fixes it recommends are run.
  2. If you can't get any pages with your browser, even in safe mode with Networking, then you may have an issue with your router/modem. Power down the system, then power down and unplug power from the Router, then power down and unplug the DSL/Cable Modem. WAIT 5 MINUTES Power on the Modem, wait for it to complete self-test (About a minute for most) then Power on the router and again wait for self-test, the power on the system.
  3. If you are still getting a valid IP address (Start RUN CMD, they type IPCONFIG at the command prompt, in XP, Start CMD, right click CMD on the menu, Run as Administrator in 7) and see if you have a 192.168.xxx.xxx IP address and a default gateway. If you do then the router is working and you may have issues with the cable modem. if you have a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address and no default gateway then you system is not getting a valid IP address and is assigning one on it's own. In this case, I'd try a system restore to a time when it worked. If that is no go, you may have a NIC failure.

how do i get into the safemode on the gateway 7405gx laptop

For any windows computer its always F8.
But some times there are few boards which are designed to launch Device Boot Menu when you press F8. If you are struck with this kind of screen,
shanks_07.jpg
Then Choose the Hard Drive from the List then Press Enter and immediately start tapping F8 you should get the advanced boot menu now. Make you choose the Hard Drive from the list then press enter then immd start tapping F8. That's it
