Tip & How-To about Dishwashers

L.G E1 Error / Whistling Sound

L.G E1 Error / Whistling Sound

In this Tip I will show you how to fix it. This error is not to be confused with the 1E error, as this means something completely different.

TOOLS REQUIRED:

- Circulation Pump (P/N: 5859DD9001A) * I will use "Circ. Pump" when referring to it. Get it from your nearest appliance spare shop.
- Screw Driver (Star/Phillips)
- Towel
- Pointed Object (Flat Screwdriver is best)
- Patience

SYMPTOM:

E1 is showing on the LED Panel. In most cases this is accompanied with a whirring/whistling sound from the Dishwasher. This solution will also solve motor noises as described above.

REASON:

There is an excessive or low amount of RPM picked up on the Circ. Motor Impellers during wash cycle. The reason for this is a water leakage on the Circ. Motor. The seal basically got worn, and water came through to the motor shaft leading to the bearings, thus the whistling sound (if any):

The only way to repair this error correctly is to replace the Circ. Pump.

CHECKS YOU HAVE TO PERFORM BEFORE DOING ANYTHING:

Firstly check for any leakages on the hoses or plastic covers, especially the hoses & covers directly connected to the Circulation Pump, any leakages will also trigger this error code. Check the below mentioned "Accessing the Circulation pump" instructions, for easy access to the Circulation Motor.

THE REPAIR PROCEDURE

STEP 1 (Accessing the Circulation Motor)

Firstly, remove the Inlet hose from the unit, and position it in an area where you would be able to lay it on its side. Then drain all water from the dishwasher, this can be done by placing the Drainage hose on the floor (either into a low bucket or out the back door).

Then remove the Top Table (The "roof" of the dishwasher), this can be done by removing 2 to 4 screws at the back -this may vary from model to model:

Remove the Right hand Panel, you will need to open the door for the front screws - See attached pictures:

You then need to close the door, and remove the bottom cover panel, there will be 2 more screws here:

You can now remove the Right hand Panel and you should see the following:

Now, put the towel on the Left side of the machine, you are going to tilt the dishwasher to its side, and water will likely leak out on that side.

Lift up the insulation material, and then lean the dishwasher back so that it is laying on the Left Panel:

Again some screws would need to be removed from the Base Cover, see pictures:

STEP 2 (Removing the Circ. Motor)

Now you have to stretch the Base Cover to allow yourself some more space to remove the Circulation Pump. To do this, insert your flat end into the Jimmy Space (Shown on the previous picture), use this in a crowbar like action, to give you some extra space - Beware not to break the plastic!

Remove the Screw mounting the Circulation Pump to the Base Cover:

Disconnect the Power cord to the Circulation Pump:

Then remove the Mounting piece, and twist and pull out the Circulation Pump from its nesting area, be careful not to break fittings or move other components (Especially the Sump) while pulling the Circulation Pump free:

The sump as seen above must not be showing more than 2 mm of silver lining, if it does, it means the sump has shifted too much, and leakages is almost a certainty. YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN :-)

With the Circ. pump removed, you can now easily insert a new one, and use the reverse of my instructions to finish the job.

Just another quick note:
Sometimes the mounting supplied is different than the one that was in the machine, always fit the new one.

That is it! Re-attach the hoses and water, connect the dishwasher to power. Test it and viola, the E1 error is no more, and any whistling sound that may have been there is now a distant memory.

PLEASE BE AWARE:

Even though this is accomplish-able by yourself, no person would disagree that an experienced and qualified technician will be able to do it more accurately and without further damages to your appliance.

Experience is what you got by not having it when you need it. ~Author Unknown
