Tip & How-To about Grilling

Cleaning Rust From Barbeques

You can buy proprietary rust removers at your local hardware store but try this first. Remove as much rust as you can with a scrubbing pad or wire wool. Pour vinegar on the plates and rub it into the rust. Try not to let it run over the edges of the plate. Allow it to soak for 15 minutes to dissolve the rust and then rub away the residue. If this doesn't remove all the rust you can try scrubbing with a paste of bread soda. You can also try scrubbing with a paste made from salt but the disadvantage with salt is that it can cause corrosion if you don't clean it all off afterwards.

how do I remove rust from a plastic container

You can try soaking it in chlorine bleach, but be sure that you clear the container of any residual bleach before using it again. Chlorine bleach can react adversely with many other chemicals and/or organic substances and can be poisonous to pets and humans.

My barbeque has been stood under a cover for a year & the two plates which you cook on have gone rusty. Is it possible to buy replacements or how do you suggest cleaning them?
