Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Problem Detecting a USB Hard drive or a USB Device If your computer or laptop has a problem detecting a USB hard drive or a USB device, and another computer can detect it, then the problem could be a RF interference problem. Then this may help. Try using an USB cable that is a shielded USB cable (ie. An USB cable that has a clear plastic covering and you can see a metallic weave which covers the wires) OR a USB cable that has a Ferrite core attached to the USB cable (the ferrite core is a cylindrical object approximately 30mm long X 15mm diameter and it is attached to the USB cable near the connector).

My Dell Laptop USB ports are not working any more

Do they not work on any device? Have you tried using a device that they used to detect in the past? Maybe the device you are using is too advanced for the old D600. For example, I would imagine it would have a hard time detecting a 1TB external hard drive.

If it will not detect a device that used to work in the past I would go into the BIOS or System Setup and make sure the USB is enabled. When you turn the laptop on just watch the screen and it will tell you which key to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup. I think it is the F2 key for the D600.

The external hard drive isn't being read from the computer. Sometimes, the hardware will light up and sometimes it doesn't. The computer is not able to detect the hard drive. Please advise.

My laptop XP is not detecting Transcend StoreJet 25 External HD 500GB, but in desktop XP it is very well detecting and working. Pls let me know the solution for my laptop

USB devices draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Sometimes, the power-output from a USB port on a laptop is _less_ than that of a USB port on a desktop computer.

Hence, there are "Y" cables -- connect to two USB ports on your computer, and to the USB device at the other end, to draw more current.

Which manufacturer of laptop?
Which model-number?
Which Operating System?
Do other USB devices work when connected to the laptop's USB ports?

computer is not detecting the drive?

right click on "My Computer/Computer" then go to Manage then go to Disk management check to see if the drive shows there if so right click on it and navigate the tabs until you see Assign a drive letter select a letter that is not in use, i usually use p-v because its use is rare. If it does not show in Disk manager check device manager and see if its under Usb/Unknown/Drives/removable storage/ or other devices if its not there then your device may be damaged or your port may not be installed properly/damaged

A failure message from the SMART system of this nature indicates that a catastrophic hard drive failure could be imminent. Without delay, back up ANY data you want to keep. This error isn't going to go away, and is being reported by the drive controller.

Whilever you can access the drive, move any data you want onto another media (such as DVD or external USB hard drive) because chances are it's not going to work much longer. You need to look at buying a new hard drive as soon as you possibly can, and migrating the data to it.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will be able to backup your data to another media.
