Tip & How-To about GPS

Garmin GPS - stuck , not updating, no signal problems, update maps

If your Garmin GPS is stuck on a loading screen, not updating properly, not acquiring a signal or having other quirky problems. You can follow the steps below to help resolve some of these issues.

In order to update the firmware on your Garmin GPS device you will need a USB cable and Garmin's WebUpdater software. You can find the update software from the following link below,

To update your firmware through the WebUpdater software, you want to turn off your GPS device, plug it into your computer. Run the WebUpdater software then turn on your device. If the software does not list your GPS then click the "Find Device" button.

Updating the maps can resolve issues with missing streets, or the unit being off entirely(roads are updated throughout the world on a constant basis). Keeping your software up to date is always recommended.

Firmware upgrades will help resolve issues in the operating software, and may even help GPS problems you are experiencing. If not, you can perform a soft reset. As a last resort, you will want to perform a hard reset below.

Perform a hard/soft reset
A hard reset will reset the device back to factory defaults. This will also delete any of your personal favorites saved on the device.

Soft Reset

Slide the power button to the left and hold in this position for 8 seconds. Push the switch to the right to power the GPS back on.

Hard Reset
Turn the unit off. Press and hold the bottom right of the GPS screen. Continue to hold while powering on the GPS. you should now have a prompt asking you to erase all data. Select Yes. Afterwards, it is recommended that you leave the GPS outside somewhere safe to acquire a GPS signal. Once this is done, you can update the GPS using the update steps described at the beginning of this article.

Garmin Nuvi Firmaware Update Complete, Unable to catch satellite signal

So what happens when you connect it to the PC?
Make sure no sd cards are installed while you do this.
download and install web updater, run it it gets to a screen where it looks for the gps, plug the usb cable into the GPS (no USB hubs please!!!) Make sure it detects the GPS before you continue. Select the updates you need (don't install all the languages !!) after this is done the program will report the downloads are on the garmin, unplug the unit and it will reboot and whilst rebooting it will install the updates....so don't touch it until it reboots again and displays the regular screen....and make sure the batery is fully charged before you do this...!

my sat nav spends my whole journey trying to acquire satelite, is there a communication problem or a problem with my device?

Depends on where you have the unit mounted. If in the front of a windshield, it should acquire one. If you are having problems, what is the software version? If your unit is less than version 6.5, update.

To check version, click on wrench (tools), system, about.

To update, load USB drivers (if not already done), connect Garmin, turn Garmin on, run webupdater, follow on screen prompts.

I cannot acquire satellites signal. What to do ?

I experienced the same problem about acquiring satellite signal even when it's a clear sunny day. After 30 mintues, it was still searching! The unit appeared to have "stuck" in this acquiring mode. The following worked for me: 1) open the GPS antenna 2) press the bottom left screen while holding the power button to turn the unit on 3) enter maintenace mode 4) select diagnostics 5) clear error report, do NOT clear any user data 6) restart unit the usual way My GPS 350 was able to acquire satellite signal in less than 1 minute after the above steps were taken.
