Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

What to do if your USB is not detected on your PC...

Hi Everyone,

If you are experiencing problems with Windows detecting your USB drive (Storage, MP3 or iPod), follow these steps to get them back. These problems are usually caused by either viruses or a damaged sector on the drive itself. Formatting the drives after enabling them, would usually restore all the functions back to normal.

IF USING WINDOWS XP:

Follow these simple steps,

- Right-Click on My Computer, and select "Manage"
- On the Right hand panel select "Storage" - Double Click on it
- Double Click on "Disk management(Local)"
- Your disk will most likely show here with NO Drive Letter

To fix it, assign a new drive letter to it by doing the following:
- Right-click the drive, and select "Change Drive Letter & Paths"
- Press Add.. select a letter and hit OK twice - It should now be visible.

IF USING WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7:

Follow these simple steps,

- Open the Start Bar (Lower Left Corner by default)
- On the Right hand panel select "Storage" - Double Click on it
- Double Click on "Disk management(Local)"
- Your disk will most likely show here with NO Drive Letter

To fix it, assign a new drive letter to it by doing the following:
- Right-click the drive, and select "Change Drive Letter & Paths"
- Press Add.. select a letter and hit OK twice - It should now be visible.

I hope this tip has helped you combat those pesky USB errors.

I experienced the same problem (my USB device ). try these steps:
1. Start, Control Panel,
2. Performance and Maintenance,
3. Administrative Tools,
4. Computer Management,
5. Disk Management,
6. Find the USB drive (usually the last storage device before the optical drive),
7. Click on the USB drive,
8. Right click on it and you will see the options (New Partition or Format)
9. Follow the instruction (I chose FAT32), but please do NOT chose Quick Format.

sandisk is not being recognized on my computer

SOLUTION 1 - Verify if minimum system requirement is met.
SanDisk card readers support Windows Vista, Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4.

For MAC users, see
Troubleshooting USB device on MAC

SOLUTION 2 - Verify the reader's status under Device Manager.

STEP 1 - Connect the reader to the PC

NOTE: It is recommended that you plug your card reader to the back USB port on your PC to ensure that there is enough power from the USB port for the card reader to be detected properly.

STEP 2 - Check under Device Manager
1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Select Manage.
3. On the left pane, click Device Manager.

NOTE: The card reader will appear in two places: Disk Drives and Universal Serial Bus controls as USB Mass Storage. If there is a yellow exclamation point (!) or question mark (?) next to the device, try to refresh the drivers.

STEP 3 - Refresh the drivers
1. Right-click the entry with the error mark, select Uninstall.
2. On the top menu, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.

STEP 4 - Verify if the reader is detected
1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Look for the card reader under Devices with removable storage.

SOLUTION 3 - Try other USB ports.
A yellow exclamation point (!) under Device Manager usually means that the device is not receiving enough power. If the reader is not receiving ample amount of power from the USB port, it may not function properly.

SOLUTION 4 - Change the drive letters

NOTE: The SDDR-89 reader should show 4 drive letters under My Computer.
