Tip & How-To about Cameras

Get Photo's Off of a Memory Card

With digital camera's people want to get photo's off of the camera and onto the computer. However many camera's use unique USB cables or need specific drivers in order to have the files transferred off of the camera. It's important to note that all camera's save the images to a memory card that's in the camera, it's usually in the same compartment as the battery. What you can buy is a USB card reader, they either plug directly into the computer or use a standard USB cable to connect. You take the memory card out of the camera and put it into the card reader. Then you're able to transfer all your pictures without any special cable or driver. This method is preferable because a card reader is inexpensive and you can get types that will read many different types of cards.

I have a fujifilm s2950 camera and I'm trying to upload photos onto my computer. For the first time yesterday when I plugged the cable into the computer and turned the camera on nothing happened o

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa.

The DSC-W55 doesn't charge batteries via the USB port. It comes with a separate battery charger, which plugs into a wall outlet.
