Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Simple Test to Check Domestic Remotes

The easiest way to check if your infrared remotes are working is to take an AM / FM Radio, Put it in AM/MW mode and tune it to around 630KHz. Turn up the volume and take the remote very close to the radio and press any button on the remote. You will hear streaming blips ( like from an old science fiction movie soundtrack ). This sound indicates the remote is transmitting signals.
This test is no good for radio frequency remotes like the one which you get with the BOSE lifestyle system.

PIONEER VSX-D903S - A/V Receiver
PIONEER CU-VSX079 - Remote

Here's the basics: Make sure your receiver is in the Tuner mode, by selecting Tuner on either the remote (grey button), on the receiver, or from the GUI menu. (The display will also show TUNER.) There are a couple of different ways to tune a station. One method is with the remote. Use the Band button on the remote (or via the GUI display), or the FM/AM button on the receiver, to select the frequency type. Use the Freq/Ch buttons on the remote to tune, the number buttons for presets (30 presets total. Examples: Preset 5, simply press 5; Preset 15, enter 5-5; Preset 25, enter 5-5-5). You can also use the on-screen GUI menu and the remote to tune stations, using the lower grey buttons. If you want to tune directly, via the receiver, press Select, to switch between frequency tuning and presets (displays ST CALL) mode. Use the Multi-Jog dial to make your selection in either mode. The easiest way to program a station into a preset is to use the onscreen GUI menu. [NOTE: The GUI mode (TV Monitor Video Out, composite video) is active when an amber (orange) ring glows around the Multi-Jog dial (the GUI button on the receiver will also glow simultaneously). Use the remote lower grey buttons, or use the Multi-Jog dial and Select, to move the cursor and select commands on the TV. This A/V Receiver handles composite video/S-video, and Stereo/Dolby 3-Channel/Dolby Pro-Logic audio only. (Pre-ATSC/HD video, Pre-Dolby Digital/DTS multi-channel surround audio)]

S350 won't stop scanning on AM/MW mode. Tech support said reset with paper clip but that won't stop it either. Any thoughts? John G. Warren john.g.warren@jci.com

Strange. How can it, since that Radio does not have an Automatic Tuning System. To tune in to any frequency you have to turn one of two knobs. Are you sure about the Model Number?

Remote won't work with tv.

You can cheque the remote if you have a Medium wave portable radio. MW range 550 kHz to 1600 kHz..

Tune the radio towards the 550 kHz side. Now take the remote near the radio and start pressing the keys. You will hear a whizling sound. This shows remote is functioning. No sound! check the remote battery compartment. May be the leaked battery acid would have spoilt the remote circuit PCB.

If you can dismantle the remote, you can wash the printed circuit board in running water several times. Dry with air dryer and give a try. Good Luck!
