What's more, my boss is now on a business trip and I can't contact him to unlock the word files for me or ask him to send me the unprotected versions instead. I need these word files in emergency, I have no idea on how to crack word password, and also don't have any idea about the legal situation in the context of the cracking process.

  1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. In the left pane, click Disk Management.
  3. Check if your drive has a letter assigned! Probably NOT because somehow the system remover this letter. So assign it the letter it had originally
  4. This should solve your problem

my laptop ask me primary or administrator password what shall i do to opperate my laptop?

Your laptop is password protected: in order to use it, you need to know a valid userid and passord.
- Primary password: your assigned userid and password (which could just be blank - press enter after entering userid)
- Administration password: enter admistrator userid (such as as administrator or Admin) and the assisgned password (whih could be admin) - Admistrator can override a user locked laptop.
Turning the power off to the laptop will reset the laptop to 'normal' usage but may still require a userid and password.
Hope it helps.

Passwords. Those ubiquitious alpha-numeric codes that protect us and give us access to everything digital. Unfortunately, passwords can be confusing because, though your computer likely won't forget a password, you very well might. When this happens, you can be locked out from your whole system, as in the case of the Windows XP Administrator Password. This article will show you how to remove an Administrator password.

Instructions:
  1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD drive and boot your computer. If you receive the message "press any key to boot from CD," press any key.
  2. Step 2 Press Enter to setup Windows. After accepting the license agreement, you wil be asked if you want start a Repair process.
  3. Step 3 Press R to begin the Repair process. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files, which can take several minutes. After this, reboot. Let the computer boot normally (do not press a key to boot from CD).
  4. Step 4 Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen. When you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This will open a command line console.
  5. Step 5 Type NUSRMGR.CPL at the prompt and press Enter. This will give you access to User Accounts. Remove or change your password. Write it down! After the repair is finished, you will be able to log on with your new password.
Good luck!

If i am helpful please rate me.
Thank you.

I am trying to repair the hive file using the Windows Application and Recovery disk - it is requesting the Administrators password and I cannot locate it. Is there a way to recover the Admin Password - or work around ? Without reformatting the whole hard drive. Joe

Here’s your GEEK-steer …
ADMINISTRATOR VS ADMINISTRATOR.
It may help to understand the distinction of the word "administrator". There is:
1. The ACCOUNT which is named "Administrator" (unless it has been subsequently renamed since initial install).
2. The WORD "administrator" as it relates to the TYPE OF PRIVILEGES (aka credentials) a user may be assigned. These privileges are akin to a master key granting FULL access to your operating system.
USER ACCOUNT NOT SHOWN AT WELCOME SCREEN.
If you have need to login to an account (i.e., "Administrator", "Guest", etc.), but it's not shown at your "Windows XP Welcome Screen":
1. Depress and hold down, then release (in sequence) the keys 'Ctrl'+'Alt'+'Del' two times (or more if a sequence isn't recognized successfully).
2. A "Log On to Windows" dialog will display in which you can login as any registered user.
RESETTING FORGOTTEN PASSWORD.
METHOD 1: MAYBE THERE IS NO PASSWORD.
Depending upon the login location, try it with the password input field left blank. If you're lucky (for this situation only I mean), there has never been a password assigned to the 'Administrator' account (applies to Windows XP only).
ADVISORY: If this is your solution, you need to assign a password to it, because there really should have been one in the first place. Leaving the 'Administrator' account left unprotected is not only leaving the "backdoor open", but also the front door with a sign that says "come on in, I'm not home."
METHOD 2: RESET 'ADMINISTRATOR' (OR ANY USER'S) PASSWORD VIA USER WITH ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES.
1. Login to Windows as any user (with known password) that has administrator privileges.
2. Start > Run ... > type "control userpasswords2" (without quotes), then "OK".
3. Select the user account you can't remember the password to, then click "Reset Password".
4. Type a new password in "New password" and "Confirm new password", then "OK".
NOTE: You may (you shouldn't, but you may) also have a user account that's NOT password protected AND has administrator privileges.
METHOD 3: SOFTWARE SOLUTION.
If methods 1 and 2 are not successful, you're then left with the big gun: "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" (UBCD4Win). It's a FREEWARE multi-functional recovery boot disk. One of its MANY included utilities is "Sala Password Renew". With it, you can create a new local user with administrator privileges. You can then successfully use method 2 to reset the "Administrator" account. Go to this website http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm and follow the guidance found there. There are other FREEWARE all-purpose recovery boot disk available (TRK-Trinity Rescue Kit, UBCD, etc.), but in my opinion, UBCD4Win is your best choice.
NOTE: If compelled to use this method, look upon it as a blessing in disguise. It’s an invaluable tool you’ll likely be relieved to have many times over in the future. In fact, you should strongly consider it even if you don't NEED it "this time". After all, the time to have this disk is BEFORE you need it.
Good luck, and please post back and let me know how things turn out, or if you have any further questions.
