Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet
Computers slow down after a while. Most of the time they can be revived by following some simple maintenance procedures.
One of the biggest culprits to a slow computer is a fragmented file system. As files are written and overwritten constantly, parts of files get written to different parts of your hard drive. In order for the computer to read these file, it has to jump all over the hard drive which slows your computer down. In order to fix this, it is recommended that you maintain at least a minimum of 10% free space on your hard drives. Then at least once per month, run a disk defragmenting program such as the built-in one that comes with Windows, or a 3rd party program such as Jeroen Kessel's MyDefrag.
Download the latest version from the Downloads page (currently v4.3.1), run the install program and leave the default components checked, but make sure to check the box for the Screensaver program under Additional Tasks if you want your computer to defragment your harddrive while your computer is on and idle (when you are not using it). This is my favorite option and saves you from running a full defragment every month. If you select this option, the screen saver selection dialog opens up and you need to select the Defrag screensaver and click OK.
If you do not use the screensaver option, Run MyDefrag from your Start/Programs menu. Select the option for System Disk Monthly then click drive C and click Run. You can continue to do other tasks while it is running.
