Tip & How-To about HEWLETT-PACKARD CM1415fnw AllInOne Laser Printer
The 49 error is the printer telling you that a command or information it received it did not know how to process. Much like if someone tried to tell you how to do something but spoke a different language than you. The first step to fix this problem is to restart the printer. If it comes to ready, skip down to the next paragraph. If if does not come to ready, you will need to clear any print jobs from the print queue on your computer and then restart the printer again. If the 49 error still occurs, you will need to unplug either the parallel, network cable or usb cable to see if the printer will come to ready with no computer attached, if it does then restart your computer and then reattach the cable. If the printer is on a network, make sure that no computers have jobs in the queue for the printer. Once you have the printer at ready and attached to your computer. you will need to update the firmware as this usually fixes a 49 error. Go to www.hp.com and from this page select "SUPPORT AND DRIVERS". Type in the model of your printer. For most home machines, the new firmware will be shown once you select your correct operating system. For business class machines, there will usually be an option for "cross operating systems (bios, firmware, diagnostics, etc). Once you have downloaded the new firmware file, there will be a readme file attached that explains how to install the new firmware. For many of the newer printers, an Easy Firmware Update Utility is available. It is simply an executable file that finds any compatible pirnters automatically and processes the update. This is the best choice if your printer comes to ready and is connected to your computer via USB.
