Tip & How-To about Water Heaters

Rest Electric Hot Water Tank Thermostat

I understand that you need to reset your hot water tank thermostat. Here are some instructions for you to follow with visual aids on what you are looking for and what you need to rest.

First you must locate the thermostat in order to rest it. There are usually two service panels on a hot water tank. The service panels look similar to the ones in the picture below.

Once you locate the service panel(s) you will need to remove the top on and locate the thermostat the reset should be in the top one. You will be looking for the button that is located in the middle of the thermostat. This button will need to be pushed down firmly. The rest button is often red however; it comes in many different colors, shapes and sizes.

If the thermostat rest automatically pops back up then you will need to replace the thermostat. If you do not hear the heating elements heating up like in your coffee maker her the noise of the elements heating. You may have a bad element or thermostat of even both may be bad. The cost of rebuilding a hot water tank is cheap compared to replacing so I would suggest rebuilding. This is a pretty easy task that you can also receive help from FixYa for.

my suburban dsi rv hot water keeps throwing breakers

Appears to be a short in tank circuit probably cause by a water leak in tank. These usually wear a rusty hole in the tank inside the cover and are not seen unless the thermostat covers are taken off. I would remove them and do a visual thoroughly. Anytime a fuse blows or a breaker trips is always a dead short unless you have a bad breaker. I would check those as well for vibrating, chattering noises, and/or smoking. If any of this persist, replace breaker. A melted heat element could trip them, but not usually for it leaves an open circuit instead of a shorted one.

Rheem 82vr52-2 water heater, I need to do a reset , Can you help me ?

Hello Gwest rxshaw,

I understand that you are having a problem with your Hot water heater and need to reset the thermostats on it. The hot water tank that you have has an upper and a lower element the upper thermostat has the reset in most cases. I will try to walk you thru it.

1. Remove the upper service panel on the side of the tank
2 You will see the black thermostat it has a plastic cover over it and has wires running form the top of the tank to it and wires running from it down ward toward the other service panel. Do not remove the plastic cover as it does not need to be removed and lessens the chance of getting shocked.
3. Locate the dime size red button in the middle of the thermostat press it down and release
4. Listen to the hot water tank you should hear it heating up if the rest worked.
Below is a picture of the thermostat and red button that you need to push.

Post back to this thread so I may assit you further.

I have a Reliance 501 model # 5 30 2srs4. I had to reset the unit after waking up to cold water. The water heated up in no time at all but the water was super hot. So hot it triped the reset button again. I reset again. The top of the tank feels warn to the touch and the bottom of the tank feels cool to the touch.there is power to the top thermostat.there is no power in the lower element. does this sound like the lower thermostat needs replacing?

No, the top thermostat will always heat first and then it should dwitch the power to the bottom one after the top of the tank heats...this is to get you hot water faster...
The top thermostat is bad and is not shutting off or switching....
Replace the top thermostat/reset combination and you''l be good!!
