Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

Washing machine tips

Unplug your washing machine before you do anything. Since you are cleaning your washing machine, you might as well go all out and clean the front, top and sides with the spray cleaner. Clean under the lid and all the surfaces just inside the washer with the spray cleaner. Set the machine to the hot water and largest load settings. Once the machine is full, add the lemon or lime juice if you have rust problems or add the vinegar if you have odor problems. If you have both, do one "load" of each. Let the washer finish the cycle. If you are satisfied with the stain/odor removal, run another cycle on hot at the largest load setting without adding anything to the water.

How do I clean the Maytag washing machine's filter

Front loading
unplug the machine
Raise the front (use wooden blocks, whatever
Look for the screws to the bottom panel, remove them, then the panel
Remove the filter, clean it
Replace the filter into its housing and turn clockwise to lock it in place. Replace the panel, making sure it catches in the top brackets. Insert the bottom screws and tighten them.
Remove the wooden blocks and lower the machine to the floor. Plug the machine back in.

Unplug the machine
Depending on the model (Maytags are usually Whirlpool washers) you:
don't have a filter
or you have one in the control panel (be careful if you find that's the case)
or - most likely - you have a screen or other parts below your agitator that are clogged.
If it's the last item - removing the agitator usually isn't that difficult - socket wrench and an extension and socket lets you remove it by pulling straight up - then take a look at what's going on. You may be able to simply clean things up at the bottom of the washer tub, or you may need to order replacement parts. Then reassemble.
If it leaks occasionally that's probably a clogged or kinked drainage hose at the back, remve and clean it then reattach.

Washer won't drain. Pretty sure it's clogged but not sure how to check for this.

Hi, You don't mention whether this is a top loader or front loader. On the top loader you need to get to the drain pump. Front of washer may come off or the lid comes off and then the front. Some of them had clips under the console. Once you are at the pump, take a shop vac and empty the water. Both hoses inlet and outlet will have to be removed and cleaned. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ON THIS, UNPLUG THE MACHINE!!! If its a front loader the kickplate has to come off or the whole front, and same procedure as above. Hope this helps.

Open door
Remove the door lock assembly
Check contacts of the door switch.
Replace if faulty or try to clean with electronics cleaning solvent.
