Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

No Hard Booting

You may sometimes be tempted to turn your laptop off by simply holding down the power button until it powers down. Although quick, this method is harmful to the laptop and could cause data loss. A hard reboot should only be used as a last resort. Sometimes this is inevitable, for instance, when Windows hangs. But this should not be a regular practice.

These steps when followed will help your laptop in many ways as a little care in maintenance will go a long way in increasing your laptop's life.

hard reset

Hard reset may refer to either simply powering down the phone or to a procedure to return it to its factory defaults.

To power a cell phone down, keep the power button depressed for about 15 seconds. The option to power down the phone should appear on the screen. Select it. To turn the phone back on, simply depress the power button and release it. The phone will "reboot." Do not bother it again until the familiar home screen appears.

That procedure seems to clear away temporary files without affecting bookmarks, etc.. If your phone is operating slowly, such a power down and reboot may help.

This is NOT the hard reset that will return you to factory defaults. The reset that will do that is achieved at least by two different methods listed below. And both are a destructive reset that returns your phone to "right out of the box" status. It will not show your Google email account until you set it back up on the phone.

The most obvious method is to make use of this through your settings menu.

Performing a factory reset via the settings menu
  • Open the Notifications panel and press Setting.
  • Click Backup / Restore and Reset .
  • Click Reset phone .
  • If you want to remove multimedia data on HTC One, then select Erase all data.
  • Then click OK.
An alternative way, and indeed the way an HTC tech walked me through for my HTC android phone, for example, is:

Performing a factory reset using hardware buttons
  1. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then press and hold the POWER button.
  2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
  3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.
I would recommend you Google "hard reset" and include the brand of your phone in that Google.

My phone is locked on the recent calls screen and although it has let me clear all recent calls it won't let me cancel the function, so I am not able to return to the screen to let me view phone book or make calls out.

you need to reboot the phone. if that doesnt work hold down the home key for a minute. as well or simply sync it back to itunes. gives it a quick refresh

If pressing the power button once doesn't work. Then Hold the Power button down for 10+ Seconds until your computer shuts down, then simply turn it back on.
