When you're on the road, you can significantly conserve battery power by dimming your laptop screen's brightness. Make sure there are no CDs or DVDs sitting in your optical drive, and don't connect any USB peripherals--all power hogs. Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G networking (you have to do that in flight anyhow).
Also, tweak your laptop's power settings to conserve your battery. For example, in Windows Vista, go to Control Panel, Power Options and select the "Power saver" setting You can adjust the "Power saver" settings, if you want, or create your own power plan

Open Power Options in Control Panel, depending on your OS, set to High Performance, Change Plan settings, adjust or Change Advanced Power settings. If your on battery power your Laptop will dim the display to conserve battery power.

If it's on battery, the software Dims the Display to conserve battery. On AC power, Open the Power settings, in Control Panel, Advances Power settings, adjust to High Performance, Set brightness to 100%.

why does my screen dim when the power cable is not plugged in


This is done to conserve battery power so the laptop will work for a longer time at a reduced screen brightness when it is not plugged into the Mains supply.

how do you make the lighting on the screen brighter without the charger in ?


The screen will automatically dim slightly when it is on battery power, this is to conserve battery power. For maximum brightness connect the power adapter into the laptop.
On the Thinkpad laptops you can adjust the brightness by pressing and holding down the blue Fn key plus the Home key to brighten or the End key to dim the screen.
