How To Clean Up Your Computer

Everything in life needs maintenance, and your computer is no different. Everything you do and see on your computer takes up space. Over time, heavy use can start to weigh it down and make your pc run slow. What can you do when your computer becomes cluttered and slow? That's easy! You can clean it up and reorganize the stored files for optimal performance.

The first thing to do to clean up your pc is to run "disk cleanup". Disk cleanup is a program that deletes clutter and creates more useable memory. If you are using Windows Xp, you can find disk clean up by clicking on "start", then "programs" and "accessories". Then slide over to "system tools" and click on "disk cleanup".

After clicking on disk cleanup, your computer will display a message that says it is calculating how much space can be recovered on your "C" drive. When it is finished, you will see a screen that shows choices of files in which to purge on the left and the "ok" button on the bottom. Click on every box that is available and choose ok to begin cleaning your disk.

This process can take a while, depending on how long it has been since the last time you cleaned your computer. When its finished, the program will have removed all unnecessary files to free more memory space. But we are not done yet! There is still one more program to run the complete the process and leave your computer running at its best. That program is called "disk defragmentor" and its found in the same place as disk cleanup.

To run disk defragmentor, click on "start", "programs" find "accessories" and then choose "system tools". Click on disk defragmentor and a window will open asking which drive you wish to defragmentate. Choose your "C" drive and then click "ok" or "defrag" at the bottom.

Disk defragmentor reorganizes files to bring all of your free space to the front of the drive where it is needed most.

Running both of these programs once every couple of weeks will keep your computer at its best.

how to get my toshiba 1905-s301 to run on just ac power

First off...Laptop computers use a conversion power supply. 110 VAC in and perhaps 19.0 or less DC out. You cannot power up directly with AC current and if you try, you will blow the computer. You may also be required to keep the Battery fresh and charged for full operation. PC's Mid-tower and up all use 110 VAC power supplies and all conversions (Transformations) take place in that unit. The difference is more power and long service life to all of the components. Our company suggest to our clients, do not use Laptops as the main computer for heavy duty use. They are made for easy transport, lightweight, and short term use. The PC (Towers) are heavy duty, they can be left on all of the time (as long as they are on a UPS), have loads of power to run the main-board, and added devices such as USB attachments and Graphics cards. Life span> Towers are 6-10 years, Laptops 3-5 years.

HARD DISK MAINTENANCE To remove redundant and temporary files, recover hard disk space and speed up hard disk access, then hard disk maintenance should be done at least once a month. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter ? click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse (can skip this) - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time. DO NOT STOP THESE PROCESSES, LET THE COMPUTER COMPLETE THESE TASKS. Next time when you run Disk Cleanup and Defrag to won't take as long.

geekman, Yes I have gone through the deletion of temp files and I also did a defrag. I ran a chkdsk as well to see what was taking up space but all it said was that there was no space. The computer was formated back in December so there shouldn't be that much space taken in those either. You think there could be a back up of the files hidden somewhere?
