Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies
Installing a printer without a software disk is easier than you think!
Most people don't know that software and drivers for printer installation are avaialble free of charge on the internet. So what do you do if you lost your disk and need to install a printer? The first step is to find the brand name and model number of your printer which should be located on the front near the keypad area and write it down on a piece of paper.
After writing down the make and model name of your printer, go to your computer and open your internet browser. Find the search box on your home page and type in the brand name and model number to locate the manufacturers website.
If your printer was made by Hewlitt Packard of "HP", go to their website which is located at http://www.hp.com.
If you bought a printer made by Lexmark, go to their website located at http://www.lexmark.com. For printers made by Brother, you can find their website at http://www.brother.com.
Once you find the website, look for the area that says "customer support" or "download drivers & software" and click on it the link to open it. Search for your drivers and/or software by entering the model information from your printer and again press enter. Find the file for your operating system (Windows Xp, Vista ect.,) and click on the link to download it to your computer. If you see a pop up window that asks if you want to "save" or "open" the file, I suggest choosing the "open" option.
If you choose to "save" your file, it will be downloaded as a program and saved to your computer for installation later. If you use this option, you will be asked where you want to save your file on your computer. I suggest that you choose a location that is easy to remember so you don't waste time locating it later. A good place to save your file would be your desktop or your documents area on your computer. After choosing the location to save your file press the enter key or click on the "ok" button on your screen to begin your download.
If you choose to "open" your file, it will be downloaded without saving a copy of the program to your computer. When you open a download instead of saving it to your comptuer, the file starts the process immediately.
After your file has finished downloading, follow the prompts to install the software to your computer. The program will choose the default settings which are usually optimal for your operating system. When the program has finished installing, you will see the ICON on your desktop which means your ready to connect your printer.
It is important to install the software for your printer before you connect it to your computer and turn it on. If the software is installed before you connect the printer, your computer will be able to recognize it the moment you turn it on.
If you have installed your software and can see the program on your desktop, then its time to connect your printer cable to your computer. Connect your cable and then turn on your printer and watch the lower right side of your computer screen near the clock area to make sure it is recognized correctly. You should see a pop up message about your printer or an icon appear that verifies you are on the right track in the correct order for your installation.
Once it is connected, trying printing a document to test your settings and then your done! If you run into trouble, go back to the manufactures website for troubleshooting assistance.
