Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

169.254.X.X IP Address issues - Resetting TCP/IP.

Instruction:

  1. Completely disable any firewalls for the below. This includes Antivirus software with a default firewall component: PC-Illan, for example.
  2. Turn off the notebook.
Unplug, wait thirty seconds, and replug in the wireless router or AP.
    Cold start your notebook.
  3. Perform a winsock Fix including reinstalling TCP/IP.

Reinstall of the TCP/IP protocol to restore Winsock functionality

Step 1: Delete registry keys

  1. Open Regedit from the Run line.
  2. Go to both of the following keys, export each of them, and then delete them:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
    -- and --
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
  3. Restart the computer.
Note: It is important to restart the computer after deleting the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the XP operating system to recreate shell entries for those two keys. If this is not done, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP on top of itself

  1. Open the properties window of the network connection.
  2. Click Install.
  3. Click Protocol, then Add.
  4. Click Have Disk.
  5. Type the path to the nettcpip.inf file, for example: c:\windows\inf, and click Ok (if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder, it may not show up in the list).
  6. You should now see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list of available protocols. Select it and click Ok.
  7. Restart the computer.
When the computer reboots you will have functional Winsock keys.
Note: If the network connection properties contained more than the following three items: Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP, then the additional items may need to be removed in order to restore browsing. If those items are needed they can be reinstalled. The reason for removing them is due to those items placing entries into the Winsock keys and those entries will no longer be there.

Side effects and possible problems:

This method will restore basic functionality to the Winsock keys, but is not a complete rebuild. On a default install of Windows XP the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2\ParametersProtocol_Catalog9\Catalog_Entries - will have 11 sub-keys

When applying this method, the Catalog_Entries will only have three sub-keys. However, it works and there does not appear to be any side effects. The missing entries relate back to the: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces key

Also, third-party proxy software or firewalls may need to be reinstalled.

Reinstalling/Resetting TCP/IP:

  1. Click Start and select Run.
  2. Type netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and click Ok.

Webroot is an Internet security company based out of Colorado.
The company, founded in 1997, offers Internet security programs for businesses and home users.
The Webroot Internet Security Essentials and Webroot Internet Security Complete programs include a firewall that's designed to monitor incoming data and filter out potentially unsafe data.
Consequently, Webroot does not recommend that you disable the firewall.
Nevertheless, if you want to use a different firewall or if the firewall is blocking legitimate data, disable it with a few clicks.

Launch the Webroot program.
Click "Edit Settings" under "PC Security" in the "Home" panel.
The PC Security panel opens.
Click the "Firewall" tab.
Check the circle next to "Allow All Traffic." The Webroot Firewall is now disabled.

i can't sign in to yahoo messenger, what's the possible reason?

If you can browse other site, it is usually indicate an issue with a Network Firewall either on the PC/Laptop or on the Router.
If you have an antivirus/antispyware/firewall installed on your PC/Laptop, review the log to see if it is stopping you from using a Mail program or just temporarily disable the antivirus/antispyware/firewal software before trying to disable your router firewall (if you are allowed that is!).
Hope the information is useful.

A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

i cant dissable my default settings to allow windows media player to run, it has always worked previous to installing mcafee security system! could this be the problem and how do i fix it? Thanks

Try completely disabling the antivirus software, firewall, etc. and see if media player will run. If it does then you answered your own question.

If not go to control panel, add or remove programs, and add or remove windows components, make sure the box for windows media player is checked and click next to reinstall.
