Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

Setting up printer on XP

To add a printer, first follow your printer's instruction manual to assemble your printer and connect it to your computer. When you are ready to install the software, have your printer's CD-ROM or floppy disk handy.

1. Open the Start menu and choose Settings, then Printers.

2. Double-click on Add Printers.

3. Follow the instructions provided by the Print wizard. If you're adding a network printer, be sure to find out its name or network path. To make sure you're using the most recent printer driver, insert your printer CD-ROM or floppy disk when asked. You can also choose a preinstalled driver that matches the printer make and model you're trying to add, but it might be older than a driver that came with the printer. (If you're installing a networked printer, ask your system administrator if there are newer drivers available on the network.)

4. When prompted, indicate whether you want to use this printer as the default. If you have only one printer, you will say yes. If you have two, you must choose which one is to be the default.

5. When asked if you want to print a test page, say yes.

6. When satisfied, click Finish to complete the installation process.

Follow the rest of the instructions in the wizard.

Make sure the device is turned on and that the batteries don't need to be replaced.

Make sure the Bluetooth adapter for your computer is attached and turned on, and that the device is turned on and discoverable.

If you're not sure how to turn on discoverability, read the instructions that came with the device or check the manufacturer's website.

Make sure that you installed the device using the correct program. If not, reinstall the device.

For a printer, follow these steps:

Open the Add Printer wizard by clicking the Start Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, clicking Printers, and then clicking Add a printer.

I have a Brother HL2070N printer. I have 2 computers and want to share the printer. I connected the printer via the USB port to Computer 1 and it prints fine. I set the printer to SHARED. Computer 1 has a direct connection to the internet via a wireless router. Computer 2 shares the internet connection via a wireless card. I cannot print from Computer 2. When I try to Add Printer on Computer 2 it does not see the shared printer.

hi there,

Because printers and networks vary, the best instructions for setting up and networking your printer should be in its users manual. Also, your network-ready printer may have come with installation software that can help you share the printer over the network.

There are three main steps you need to take when networking a printer, including the following: Enable the File And Printer Sharing setting, Make the printer available to all users, and Direct PCs to the printer.

For detailed instructions on sharing printers at home, please refer to the "Get Your House In Order" article in the "See Also:" section below.
