Tip & How-To about Audio Players & Recorders

This tip is for qualified service persons only. Others will not understand it.

Ok, we've all experienced when a component releases it's black smoke...
Every component that possesses black smoke will not operate properly once it starts allowing it's black smoke to escape.
If you see a component release it's black smoke while you are repairing it, quickly shut off the unit, gather up all the black smoke, and remove the air from it. Put the black smoke back into the component it came from, and reseal the component so the black smoke can no longer escape.
Make sure you get ALL the black smoke, or the component may still not operate at all, or will operate in a degraded or altered state.
Make sure you hold your breath during the entire procedure.
Any black smoke you breathe in will be irretrievable, and therefore missing from the component once the reinsertion is complete.
If you have any questions about the black smoke reinsertion process, don't hesitate to ask - just don't ask at all, because obviously this tip was meant only to brighten the day of my fellow techs.

DVD player does not recongnize blu-ray DVD but plays ordinary DVDs ok.

Check whether the discs are dirty or scratched. Check whther they are region compactable. If all are OK, the Blu-Ray laser pickup unit of your system is fault and slould be replaced. It is really a skilled work, and you should have through knoledge in electronics, and all tools to repair the set. Otherwise, get this set repaired by any experienced service person or by the Authorised Service Center for Insignia at your town. The whole mechanism should be disassemble to repalce the component. The work can only be done by any experienced person who know to disassemble and reassembe the whole deck mechanism. OK.

Exhaust smoke definitely not steam. Someone opined that it may be related to the turbo/exhaust system. What do you think?

A worn turbo or broken would create smoke. Blue or Gray smoke is either worn rings or a clogged PCV. White smoke is from foreign fluid entering the engine. Typically indicative of a head gasket leak. Black smoke is Leaking injectors or an ignition problem or an issue with the turbo.
If you are experiencing a loss in power then you most likely have a worn turbo bearing.

I have a Element 32"

Unfortunately, components need their black smoke.
Once the black smoke escapes, the component is useless.
(ok, that's a tech joke)

It should at least be easy to identify what components blew when you open it up.

dryer popped circutbreaker and started on fire inside dryer filled with smoke

How did the fire dept. classify it, and who did they recommend you to contact?
1. An electrical fire....electrician
2, A lint fire....Qualified service technician
3. A clothes fire...Your user's manual

You have experienced a major anomaly and this would require a thorough inspection by a qualified technician with a degree in thermal dynamics, or you could just buy a new dryer.
You need to find out if the fire started, then tripped the breaker, or did the fire start because the breaker failed to trip in time? Regardless, a dryer is usually junk after a fire. The drum would generally have soot in it and rubber or felt seals would have some permanent odor. Internal wiring and other components fail because they are not built to withstand high temperatures.
I am very concerned to know why your breaker did not trip in time to prevent a fire. Please make sure you have an answer to this question before you hookup another dryer, and maybe I will get some sleep. Here's to your safety!
