Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to have a secure internet experience

There are many greate websites on the internet that you can find by using Google or Bing , but there are many more which are fake, fraudluent, or filled with virses and malware. There is not a way to keep you 100% safe, but there are steps you can take to make sure you have a safer experience. It's not that hard to do and you just need a few programs and you are on your way.
First, make sure you have run all your updates for your software. Make sure you have run all Windows updates and program updates. For programs like Chrome, just go to help or the wrench and select "about Google Chrome."
You have many different choices to see webpages, but Chrome and Firefox are some of the better and more secure browsers out there. Internet Explorer 9 is a great one to and I would advise everyone to at least get that. For this How-to, I will be focusing on Chrome.
By itself, Chrome is good, but there are many add-ons you can get which will make is more secure and will help you know good from bad websites. In the upper right corner, you will need to click on the wrench icon, then tools, and Extentions. You will then see all the currently installed extentions and you can click on the "Get more" link at the bottom. Here are a few I would advise everyone to get.
First up, WOT, world of trust. This lets you know what is a good site and what isn't. It figures it out by other people voting if they trust the site or not.https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/bhmmomiinigofkjcapegjjndpbikblnp
Next is flash and ads. These will help clean up your webpages, save some bandwidth, and help stop programs from installing extra stuff in the background.https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/cdngiadmnkhgemkimkhiilgffbjijcie https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom
Secure Login helper. This little plugin checks to see if there is a secure login page and directs you to it. This makes sure that you are as secure as possible when logging into your favorite pages.https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/gbnlondidnnfmfnglkpaoagecnkkpcjp
This is a great starting point for everyone and you can expand out from here by getting extentions to show you email, facebook posts and more.

I want to go back to google and google + instead of bing which popped up and I did not want it

To make Google your default search engine, in Chrome, click the three bars to the far right of the Chrome browser, click Settings, Set the programs you want to run as your Home Page, removing Bing, then click "Manage Search Engines", and get rid of the engines you don't want to keep by clicking the X when you hover over them, and click "Make default" on the one you prefer. Also remove Bing from "Programs and Features" within the Control Panel. Other browsers have a similar way to change search engine preferences: sometimes by an icon next to the Search box that lets you "Manage" them.

Sometimes when you download a program, or an update for a program, there will be a box/button to add Bing as your search engine, and maybe a toolbar too. In the future, always look at the different prompts that pop up and deselect the buttons for such extras.

Babylon has become my default search engine and I cannot change it back to Google (what is the difference between a search engine and a browser?

A browser is the program you are using for browsing the internet. Examples of browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Search engine are the website or add-ons to a web browser that you use to search the internet. Examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Please indicate the browser you are using so I can instruct you how to change back your search engine to Google.
