How to make your XBox 360 run cooler

You will need several things to make your xbox run cooler. However, note that this reqires opening the xbox, and i take no responsibility if you screw up or void your warranty.
You will need:

  • Arctic Silver 5 thermal compund
  • Small Flathead screwdriver
  • Two torx bit screwdrivers (one t8, one t10)
  • One wire cutter
  • A piece of wire
  • Electrical tape
  • Aluminum foil
  • Something pointy, like a tack
  • Xbox 360 opening tool (optional)
  • Some cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • q-tips (LOTS of them)
If you do not even know how to open your xbox, I highly recommend that you just stop here and go no further.

First, disassemble the xbox. I assume you all know how to do that, but if not, then there are plenty of youtube videos on how to do so.

Now, remove the mainboard. There will be two x-clamps on the bottom. These can be removed with the flathead screwdriver; the best way to show you how to do this is to show you a video: its too hard to describe.

Once you've popped those off, then pull the heatsinks out. You will notice some whitish stuff on the chips. Get that off with q-tips and alcohol. BE CAREFUL, DO NOT SCRAPE IT OFF. If there is some you just cant get off, use a wooden toothpick to scrape it off. Be careful. Make sure you don't leave behind any q-tip lint.

Now, pick up the dvd drive. There should be one cable that is made up of lot of little ones. Use the diagram below, and clip wire 12 (use the J1D1 male connector diagram.) Clip it in the MIDDLE, because we need to splice something in. Strip the ends of the wire.

Now, remove the fan. Clip the RED and BROWN wires. Strip and splice them together. Now take your piece of spare wire, and splice that into the fan, and the dvd wires. Cover all exposed wire with electric tape.

Take the fan shroud, and cut out a piece of card stock. Make a "divider" so that you can dedicate 1 fan to each heatsink. You may have to cut some slots in the divider so that it can fit over the capacitors.

Now you need to spread some arctic silver over the chips. Give about 1 rice grain per chip, and half a grain for the small part of the GPU. Make sure that the haetsinks are clean. Reinstall the heatsinks and reattach the x-clamps.

Now put the fan shroud in. Take a piece of foil and tape it over the gpu, and make sure that the foil overlaps onto the fan shroud, so that it gets air flowing across the ENTIRE srface of the heatsink.

Put the DVD drive back in. reconnect the appropriate wires, and make sure the fan connector is plugged in as well.

Turn your xbox on to test.

Reassemble your xbox, and game on. It should be much louder (more powerful fans), and the air coming out the back will be very hot once the console warms up (which is good, since the machine is removing the heat much faster now).

IF it is running now:
Check the "coils" along the bottom or back, and dust them off with canned air.
Check the seal along the door, it may have been sprung by opening all the way too many times. To check the seal, take a note card (or business card) and place it in spots between the seal and frame for the cooler.

IF it is not running or running very loud:
Unplug the unit and let it warm up to room temp (transfer the wine into several good cooler boxes first...) and then leave it for several hours, then start it up again, this should help.

1. Don't buy a system cooler. Putting them on voids the warranty.

2. There are several "lights" and codes that can flash to show a problem with the Xbox. What code or light error are you even referring to? There are different fixes for different errors.

3. Some of the Xbox fixes that were posted on Youtube are NOT safe to use. They can void the warranty and can screw up your Xbox up MUCH more than it already is.

xbox 360

if you mean the 3 red lights, simple. You will need to have the xbox 360 running, 2 or so towels, and some time. First keep the xbox 360 running, then put the towels over the 360 (make sure to cover the vents). Keep it on for around 20 mins. Then after take off the towels, and let the system cool for another 20 mins. This should let it run for atleast another 2 hours.
