Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Cleaning and speeding up slow Windows PCs

PCs tend to slow down over time, usually as a result of the increased demands placed on them. The good news is that the situation can often be improved dramatically without having to shell out more money. For sure, one of the biggest wins is to install more memory (if possible), but after that, here are the steps that I personally follow when cleaning up machines for colleagues and friends.

  • Check the list of installed programs and ensure that you only have one internet security suite/virus scanner installed. Remove any extras.
  • Uninstall all software that you know you're not using. If there's software you're not sure about or don't recognise, feel free to add a comment to this post and I'll try and offer an opinion. The best option for uninstalling software (this point and the previous point) is to use Revo Uninstaller (Freeware version) instead of the Control Panel. It does a more thorough job than most programs' uninstallation routines. Download here: http://v.gd/V3tsfS
  • Use CCleaner. Check the options carefully - you don't necessarily want to select them all. If in doubt about any item, don't remove it. Download here: http://v.gd/4Y7FTo
  • Use something like SpaceMonger to track down big files that you can afford to delete. If you look at the "Free Software" tab on the download page, you'll find the old version 1.4.0, which is perfectly adequate. Download here: http://v.gd/GEYSt1
  • Defrag with MyDefragPowerGUI. The default options should be fine. If you can find the registry optimization options, use them too. Download here: http://www.wieldraaijer.nl/
  • So-called "registry cleaners" usually do more harm than good and are best avoided.
On the subject of installing more memory, I invariably use Crucial for home and business. Crucial's service is very reliable and there is an online scanner that in most cases does a good job of checking your system and advising you on the upgrade possibilities. I don't get any referral fees from Crucial by the way!

The factory tends to use lightweight oil,to increase fuel mileage,
not good for the life of the engine,if heavier oil was put in place, mileage could drop, but not much, maybe 1 mpg,are you sure it's not because of
extended warm up times or more idling than usual?

First, small size of RAM makes computer slow. When we use many programs at one time, computer tends to bogged down. Since, uploading/viewing pictures or watching videos on Facebook use many resources, it can result in freeze. This problem can be cured by increasing the size of RAM. An increased RAM size will make sure that enough space is available to run many programs at the same time.

Secondly, corrupt windows registry cause freezes in computer. With passage of time, registry becomes congested and corrupt. Registry is most vital part of the computer system that stores and use vital information.A neat and clean registry ensures smooth and fast computing. Clean registry means no Facebook kind of freezes. triumph trophy 900 runs on two cylinders intermitent

I would start by checking for kinks in the vacuum hose. The situation you describe would usually result in a low vacuum situation and if the hose is kinked, this could lead to the problem you describe. There could be a problem with the tap itself and a good place to look for more info is at www.triumphrat.net, the Triumph owner's forum.

In response to clarification request Honda 2005 ...The sound

IT sounds like the whining can be comming from gears that are not being well lubricated, especially when the sound increases as the car warms up.

You will need to check the fluid level for your transmission. Make sure it is adequate for this model (you may need to reference the owner's manual).

I'm not sure if this van has a differential in a place where you can check it. Bad news, you may need to visit a Honda dealer. Try to get them to diagnose the problem, then tell them you don't want it fixed. Most shops will diagnose for free, some will charge you the labor time for a minimum of 1 hour.

sorry not better news...
