Backup and Restore Favourites on Garmin Nuvi Satnav

If your garmin nuvi satnav becomes faulty it may have to be reset or indeed scrapped. Either way you lose the places saved in your favourites folder.

If you have backed them up to your computer it's a simple matter to restore them to your reset nuvi or to a new one.

To Backup Favourites in GarminNuvi Satnav

Instructions for PC:

  1. Connect the Garmin nuvi satnav to your computer
  2. Go to the Start menu
  3. Choose My Computer (or Computer for Vista and Windows 7)
  4. Right-click the Garmin nuvi drive and select Open
  5. Double-click the Garmin folder (For nuvi 1xxx series units skip this step)
  6. Double-click the GPX folder
  7. Right-click on the Current.gpx file
  8. Choose Copy from the right-click menu
  9. Right-click on any blank area on the desktop
  10. Choose Paste to put a copy of it on your computer's desktop
Instructions for Mac:
  1. Connect your garmin nuvi satnav to your Mac
  2. When you see the Garmin nuvi mounted to the desktop, double-click on it
  3. Double-click on the Garmin folder (For nuvi 1xxx series units skip this step)
  4. Double-click the GPX folder
  5. Click once on the Current.gpx file
  6. Go to the Edit menu at the top of the screen
  7. Click Copy "Current.gpx"
  8. Click any blank area on the desktop
  9. Go to the Edit menu again
  10. Click Paste Item
Now, if for some reason you need to put the file back onto your garmin nuvi satnav, you will need to send it over to your satnav using a program. For the PC, you will need MapSource which can be downloaded at:http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

To send the file back to the satnav using MapSource on a PC:
  1. Connect your Garmin Nuvi satnav to the PC
  2. Go to the Start menu
  3. Highlight All Programs (Or just Programs for Vista and Windows 7)
  4. Highlight Garmin
  5. Click MapSource
  6. Click on the File menu
  7. Select Open...
  8. At the top where it says "Look in:", select Desktop
  9. At the bottom where it says "Files of type:" select GPS eXchange Format (*.gpx)
  10. Click on the Current.gpx file
  11. Click Open
  12. Click on the Transfer menu
  13. Click Send To Device...
  14. Select the GPS in the Device drop-down list.
  15. Click Send
Currently MapSource does not work with the Mac operating system so you'll either need access to a windows computer or a windows environment on your Mac to send the file back to your satnav.

An address appeared on my gps, however, it is an address I don't recognize and never entered.\r\nHow would this happen?

If you were browsing the map on the satnav it's possible that you pressed the screen at that point which would give the option of saving it to the favourites folder. If you then pressed SAVE it would save to favourites.

Another possibility is that when you were driving the car you pressed the car icon, which shows your location. This can automatically save the location to favourites if the car was moving or if you were stopped it would ask you if you wanted to save it.

It's a good idea to back up your favourites file also just in case you have problems with your satnav at some stage and lose them. Details of how to do this are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r8422587-backup_restore_favourites_garmin_nuvi

My Garmin Nuvi 1450 stopped navigating and says it needs webupdater, but the software says "disc is full" and it can not download updates. A system check shows 1.67 gb used on disc. How do I get around this? I would like to avoid losing all my POIs, etc.

Webupdater installs to your computer, not your satnav. It's used for updating your operating system as well as installing optional extras so all the space you need will be for the operating system update. This should be very little so there may be enough space for that.

You could backup your favourites folder to your computer just in case you need to delete some of the places stored. You'll find instructions on how to do this at http://www.fixya.com/support/r8422587-backup_restore_favourites_garmin_nuvi

It's always a good idea to also back up your favourites folder to your computer so that if you lose them you can restore them back onto your satnav. Details of how to do this are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r8422587-backup_restore_favourites_garmin_nuvi
