Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to Change the Default Open With Program in Windows 7. 1. Right click on a file with the same file extention you want to change the default launching program for and then select Properties. 2. Next click on the change button. 3. Next you will want to click on the program you want to open the file. Note if there is more than one program installed that Windows knows supports the program the name will show up in this list. Note if there is more than one supported program and/or you are trying to find a program that will open a certain format I would recomment that you ucheck the "Always use the selected program..." until you are certain because this will tell Windows to now use that program to open that format. Also note some times the program that you want to use is not on this list. If it is not you will need to click on the Browse button and file the EXE file to the program that you what to use. After you find the Executable file for the program it will show up on the list. 4. After you have selected the program that you want to open the file with then click on the OK button. 5. At this point the properties should show the program you selected in the Opens with section. Next click on the the Apply and the OK buttons to save the changes. You are now ready to open your file.

after downloading vlc all my icons change into vlc. how can i get rid off it?

Deselect the option to make VLC your default player. This should revert them back to normal. However if you want to play back the media files you will have to right click the file and select play via VLC. This will not change the icon of that file back to the cone of VLC, only changing to default will do that. If you were using Windows Media icons before, then selecting Windows Media player as default player will change the icons back. Normal clicking of the mouse on a media file will cause the play back via whatever player is set as the default.

hp laptops. How can I open each program using it's own program.

Select Default Programs is one way. As you install, say a media player, in the install you will see something like Choose as Default for all media or select media to open with this software, every Media player will offer this option and will default to ALL media, so with every install it will change, unless you read each box during install, don't just blindly click next, it's been known to add unnecessary Toolbars, change your Home Page, add Malware, etc., etc., etc. Which I'm sure you are aware of. You can open the File location, music, video, etc. right click, select Open With, select media player, OR, right click, select file, select Properties, Change, apply. OR use the Default Programs on the start menu. Take a look at this, you didn't post your Make, Model of Laptop or the OS you are using, for Win7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-which-programs-windows-uses-by-default

if i try to download something, like a video,it says connect media to save destination

You do not have a default program for your video viewing or that particular video requires a specific program to be used. Ensure that your computer has a video player such as Windows Media Player if you are using a Windows OS or that you have Quick Time if you are using a Mac OS. If these programs are already installed, then you may want to ensure that they are set to be the default program for that particular video.
Download the video, then right click the video and click the option that says "Properties". When the box appears, click open with and select either Quick Time or Windows Media Player. To avoid doing this for every video, follow the instructions below:
WINDOWS OPERATION SYSTEM
  • Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button, and then click Explore.
  • Click a folder that contains a file of the type that you want Windows to open in a program that you select.
  • Right-click the file and, depending on the programs installed on your computer, complete one of the following steps:
    • Click Open With to choose the program that you want.
    • Point to Open With, and then click Choose Program to choose the program that you want.
  • The Open With dialog box is displayed. Use one of the following methods to select the program that you want to use for this file type:
    • In the Programs list, click the program that you want to use.
    • Click Browse, locate and then click the program that you want to use, and then click Open.
    • Click Look for the appropriate program on the Web to browse the Internet for the program that you want to use.
  • Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box if it is not selected.
  • Click OK.

  • MAC OS

Try loacting one of the tracks in Win Explorer then highlighting and right clicking it and selecting Open With and selecting WinAmp. If that works OK then you will need to change the file type association for the WinAmp extension and making it delault to WinAmp instead of Nero.

Change the program that opens a type of file
If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.
    1. Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
    2. Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
    3. Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
    4. Do one of the following:
      • If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
      • If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
