How to troubleshoot video issues?

Instruction:
To troubleshoot video issues, follow these steps and test your video after performing each one:

  1. Check the video signal cable connector for bent or missing pins. Check the cable for cuts.

  2. Check to see if moving the monitor connections slightly causes color changes. Tighten loose connections.

  3. In the case of systems with multiple video output connections, verify that the correct connection is being used.
    • Some systems ship with two video connectors on the back, however only one is enabled.
Example of a desktop computer equipped with 2 video output connectors.
  1. Standard on board video connection
  2. Optional video adapter connection (some models)
  1. If the monitor has multiple inputs, remove the secondary connections from the computer.

  2. Remove all signal cable extensions and Keyboard, Video, and Mouse (KVM) switch boxes.
    • Use of these devices can result in severely degraded video quality or no video symptoms.

  3. Eliminate wire bundles and magnetic fields from nearby appliances, such as those from speakers, as possible influences on color quality.

  4. If applicable, remove and reseat the video adapter card.

  5. Check to see if the display is visible and check for proper color during startup.

  6. Verify that the video is working by booting to the operating system in Safe Mode.
    • To enter Safe mode press F8 when the Windows logo first appears on the screen during system startup.

  7. Ensure that the most recent video driver has been installed.
    1. Right click on the Windows desktop.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the Settings tab.
    4. Click the Advanced button.
    5. Click the Adapter tab.
    6. Click the Properties button.
    7. Click the Driver tab.
    8. Compare the Driver Version: with the current version and update if needed.
  8. Run the monitor setup program.
    • Some monitors are supplied with setup programs on CD-ROM or diskette. Follow the manufacturers directions.
    • Readability can be improved on some systems by running the Microsoft ClearType tuner.
  9. Check video quality by changing the hardware video adapter to the lowest available resolution.
    1. Right click on the Windows desktop.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the Settings tab.
    4. Use the Screen resolution sliding selector to change resolution.
      The resolution selections available should be limited to the capabilities of the video adapter.
    • Some of the selections available may exceed the monitor capabilities and result in a temporary black screen.
    1. Click OK.
    2. Compare results with other screen resolution selections.

  10. Ensure that the display being used can support the video refresh rate and screen resolution specified in display properties.
    • The manual for your monitor should list the supported refresh rates and screen resolutions.
    • Open the Display Properties dialog box to verify that the refresh rate and screen resolutions are set properly:

      1. In the Properties window, click Settings.
      2. Click Advanced.
      3. Select the Monitor tab to view or change the refresh rate for the monitor.
Notes:
  • Some system boards ship with the AGP slot disabled and plugged. These slots have been disabled at the chipset level and do not work. The plugs should not be removed.
  • Some AGP adapters use a retaining clip, which must be moved to one side to prevent damage when removing the adapter.
  • Setting the video resolution to 640x480x16 colors in Device Manager is not the same as changing the hardware to a VGA adapter. You must change the adapter selection from the installed adapter, i.e. ATI, nVidia, or Matrox, to a standard VGA adapter in the Display Properties dialog box.
  • Some Intel chipsets uses Dynamic Video Memory technology (DVMT) for video memory. The initial memory count can indicate less than expected system memory count.
  • Signal cable extensions and keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) switches are not supported.

Verify that the BIOS and Video drivers are the latest available from Support.Dell.Com Website, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article, "How to Use the Drivers and Downloads Website"


Test the LCD in the System Setup (BIOS).
To enter the computer BIOS Setup Screen perform the following steps:
At the first text on the screen or when the Dell logo appears, tap <F2> until the message Entering Setup appears.
Note:
Some older Dell computers use an alternate key sequence instead of to enter System Setup. These key sequences include:
<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Enter>
<Delete>
<Fn>+<F1> (laptop computers only)
<Fn>+<Esc> (laptop computers only)
If you observe the same issue on the setup screen, it is not an issue with the Operating System, it is a hardware issue, Contact Technical Support/font>.


Run the Laptop Built-In Self-Test (BIST).
To run the Built-In Self-Test perform the following:
Turn the computer off.
Press and hold the D key while pressing the power button. This will start the BIST.
The screen will display multiple flashing colors. Look for lines, distortion, or any other video issues you have observed.
The laptop will restart when the test is finished.

If the LCD BIST passes, proceed to Step 4, otherwise Contact Technical Support.

Connect to an external monitor (if available), for the different types of external monitor ports that may be available on your computer refer to (Figure 1).


Display Port
Display Port is a new digital standard for connecting monitors to computers and has the capability to provide a scalable digital display interface with optional audio and high-definition content protection (HDCP) capability. Display Ports usually resemble USB Ports with one side angled.
A Display Port cable should be used if Display Port connectors are available on both the computer and the monitor.

DVI
Digital Video Interface (DVI) is the digital standard for connecting monitors to computers. DVI connections are usually color-coded with white plastic and labels.
DVI cables provide a higher quality signal than VGA cables. A DVI cable should be used if DVI connectors are available on both the computer and the monitor.

VGA
Video Graphics Array (VGA) is the analog standard for connecting monitors to computers. VGA connections are commonly color-coded with blue plastic and labels.
A VGA cable should be used if DVI connectors are not available on either the monitor or the computer.


Once it's connected, press and hold down the FN and press F8, this should display the screen on the external monitor.

When the external monitor does not work or you did not have one to test with, Contact Technical Support.

When the external monitor does work it may be an issue with the Operating System. Verify that all the drivers are the latest available from Support.Dell.Com Website, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article, "How to Use the Drivers and Downloads Website". When that does not fix the issue the Operating System may need to be reinstalled, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article, "How To Restore or Reinstall Microsoft Windows on a Dell Computer".


Check for visible damage to the LCD. To identify any damage not visible to the ***** eye, ensure you run LCD BIST on the system (refer to Step 3).

If the LCD has damages which is not covered by any applicable statutory warranty, limited hardware warranty and/or Dell-branded service, including Complete Care / Accidental Damage service, there may be a cost incurred by you for the replacement of parts.

To rectify your problem, Perfrom these steps.
Self-Test Feature Check (STFC) Your monitor provides a self-test feature that allows you to check whether your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and computer are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps:
  1. Turn off both your computer and monitor.
  2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer. To ensure proper Self-Test operation, remove both Digital (white connector) and the Analog(blue connector) cables from the back of the computer.
  3. Turn on the monitor.

Your monitor provides a self-test feature that allows you to check whether your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and computer are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps:
  1. Turn off both your computer and monitor.
  2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer. To ensure proper Self-Test operation, remove both Digital (white connector) and the Analog(blue connector) cables from the back of computer.
  3. Turn on the monitor.
    The floating 'Dell Self-test Feature Check' dialog box should appear on-screen on a black background if the monitor cannot sense a video signal and is working correctly. While in self-test mode, the power LED remains green. Also, depending upon the selected input, one of the dialogs shown below will continuously scroll through the screen.
    1. This box also appears during normal system operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
    2. Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable, then turn on both your computer and the monitor.
    If your monitor screen remains blank after you use the previous procedure, check your video controller and computer system; your monitor is functioning properly.
