Tip & How-To about NEC USB 2.0 ( ) Laptop PCMCIA CardBus PC Card Adapter (USBP2D20) Serial Adapter

USB adpater not working? Might be insufficient power

Background. I have a few older laptops with USB 1.1 built in and I wanted the faster speed of USB 2.

This was my 3rd PCCARD USB adapter, the prior 2 did not work either. Again, the PCCARD USB adapter did not work in 3 different laptops. I could not even read a flash memory stick. grrr

Turned out the problem was the laptops were not able to supply enough power to the card. When I plugged in a 5v wall wart into the card...it worked...I could read the flash memory stick. So, it appears that some of the older laptops just can't supply enough juice to the card.

This seems odd as on one of the laptops, I use an external CD drive with an attached PCCARD adapter, and it gets its power from the PCCARD.

Belkyn g router does not connects with full strength. I have connected just a laptop and a tablet. Tablet gets average speed but laptop finds it hard to receive signal.

The reason your laptop may have trouble connecting at full speed could be due to the quality of its wireless card/motherboard (if built in). There are a few things you can try, first you can try updating the drivers for your wireless card/motherboard via windows update or alternatively from the laptop manufactures website. You will need to make a note of your make and model number of your laptop which is normally on a sticker underneath the laptop. This may improve things as there have been some minor signal issues addressed with driver updates on some wireless card.

Other options:

check if your router has detachable aerials (if they can be unscrewed) if they can you could buy some aerials with a higher dbi. Routers typically ship with 1-3 dbi aerials you can get them typically as high as 8dbi for indoor use, this will improve the signal slightly. If your router has more than one aerial you should replace each of them with the same type and dbi to ensure it works correctly.

buy a usb wireless adapter, these give you access to wireless if you don't have any built in, but can also be used as replacements for your in built wireless.

change your router (a last resort) but there are a number of advantages to this, newer routers a more powerful, faster and use "N" which is faster than G. N gives you speeds of 125mbps upwards. Wireless N routers are backward compatible for B and G devices so any older devices will work but they will still be subject to any limitations of wireless B or G.

what wireless usb do i need for toshiba 230cx

That is a pretty old one so you have to watch out for a few things. The cpu and ram are not that great so you don't want to load them up. A USB wifi adapter will do exactly that. What you want is actually a PCMCIA adapter. Thats the credit card slot on the side. This works much better than the usb ones. The USB ones need a lot more over head from the computer as it goes through hardware and drivers before it gets into memory. The PCMCIA ones have a direct memory slot so you don't take the bug performance hit. I have used a 133 Acer laptop with both. With the usb it was all it would do to have one page open at a time. I had my ram maxed out too. When I tried the pcmcia card it was faster and I could browse almost as well as my new laptop. It makes that much difference at times.

The usb ports on this are version 1 so they are quite slow and you will never get close to advertised speeds. The pcmcia cards will go full speed. The other part of that was the usb ones are too easy to damage or knock out of the port. That was pretty annoying. Almost any of the usb ones will work IF the drivers are there for your version of windows. You may be stuck without drivers on both types if you are using win95. I'd make sure of the stores return policy before buying either one. The usb ones are cheaper but not as fast and more prone to damage but you may even have trouble with either type of port not being compatible with what is now available. It doesn't matter as far as brand etc.

my laptop does not have a usb port (old lady 380ED) how do I convert it to use one

It can't be done on this laptop. If it had a "PCCARD" slot (the 380ED has the older PCMCIA slot) you could get an adapter card to slide in that had USB ports on it, but there is no way to convert your serial or parallel ports to provide a USB interface. Your motherboard must be designed to support USB and yours is not.

Upgrading processor on an iBuddie A900?

i have the same model with 512 ram and no difference with the video. Its the 133 front bus is just too slow for todays video speed. Adobe flash keeps upgrading for the faster computers and outdates the older machines. What i did with my I-Buddie was to take XP off, it weighs it down with all the processing going on in the background. I put Ubuntu on it and WoW! speed is way up again. Video is watchable much improved over XP.
