Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies
You purchased an all-in-one system and hooked it up as a printer but now you want to be able to scan documents into your computer and save them to disk. How do you do this?
If you already have the unit hooked up to print you probably loaded the software off the disk which came with the unit. In many cases though you do not need to load the software as most units are plug and play. You just plug them in and the software is already in the operating system. The catch is that only the software for printing is available from the operating system.
There are two ways to load the drivers for the scanning process. One is from the supplied disk and the other is from the manufacturers driver download site on the internet. The advantage of downloading from the site is you will get the most up to date drivers and possible prloblems should be solved making for less problems for you. I will describe both options starting with downloading from a CD.
If you did not load the software from the disk yet, open the CD drive on your computer and load the disc which came with the printer.
It should start automatically, but if it does not, click on "My computer" if the icon is on your desktop, or click on start which will open a window containing "My computer".
Clicking on "my computer" will open a new window which should show the various drives (C, D, DVD-CD, etc). You need to click on the icon which shows the driver disc for the printer.
It will more than likely refer to the printer by model number. Once launched the software should be automatic and install all the necessary software drivers to run the printer to include scanning to your computer. Follow the on screen instructions and answer any questions. You may be asked where you want to store it, always choose the "C" drive.
When the software is done loading you may or may not have to reboot your computer. I always recommend rebooting, whether told to or not, to ensure that the software is accessable to the operating system.
Once the computer is rebooted you should see an Icon to launch the printer, if you do not see it, click on start. Next you will see "all programs" at the bottom of the window. Click or mouse over this. A new window will open which will show all the software on the computer. All the programs will be listed alphabetically. Find "HP 1350" and mouse over it. Find the main program (usually the name of the printer) and "RIGHT CLICK" on it.
This opens a window which gives you selections, one of which is, "create a desktop icon". Click on that and close all windows. You now should have an icon on the desktop which will link you to the software.
Click on the icon. The software will boot up and you should see a selection for "scan a document to the computer" or something similar.
Click on that choice and the rest should be automatic. Follow the on-screen instructions and you should be able to scan and save to disk anything you would like.
To install the driver from the internet log on and Google the manufacturers website. There should be a tab for support. Open this and click on driver/software downloads or perhaps just downloads. This should open another window where you enter your model number and possibly other information.
Once you are at the download page choose the driver for your operating system (XP, Vista, 7) and the number of bits (32 or 64). Sometimes this is automatic. Proceed with the download by hitting the download button. This will open a window asking if you want to run or save the program. Run the program. It should be automatic from this point but if not just follow the instructions.
When the download completes you may have to reboot. If not reboot anyway. You should see a message that new programs were installed. Now you are at the same point as above when loading from disk after the reboot and can follow the instructions above to finish the process.
Thanks for using FixYa and the great rating.
