Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

How to enable IP routing

If you have 2 network cards for example it may be advantageous to enable IP routing for two networks separately each well. If this routing is not enabled frames may remain blocked thus preventing communication.
Here's how to enable IP routing:

1_ Start, Run and type Regedit
2_ Locate the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters
3_ Create (or modify) a DWORD value named: IPEnableRouter
4_ Assign it the value 1

Major wireless problems.. I can connect to my wireless router (Thomson 585v8) but i cant connect to the internet. When it connects it says local only. How do i fix it so i can go on the internet..??

check if the ip address that you are getting begins with 192.169.x.x ( x = any number between 1 to 254) check that your router the DHCP service is enable and that there a network range set (example lets say your gateway ip is 192.158.0.1 then your dhcp by defult in most cases will look like this ip range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 using a netmask of 255.255.255.0 that will give you 254 ips per network.)

if your ip start with 192.169.x.x the that means that your machine is not getting a real ip assigned to it all you get is an APIPA that is just a reseved ip by the system to fill out ethernet interfaces that don't have and static ip or are in a network without a DHCP server.

you can set a static ip in the client pc if you don't want to enable DHCP in the router.

when you see Local Only message it means that your pc hasn't detected a route to the outside network ( internet ) without a proper gateway you will not be able to get to the internet, your router ip is always your gateway.

example:

Router Client pc

IP 192,168.0.1 IP 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1

INSTALLING A NETWORK PRINTER These instructions generally apply to all network printers with built-in network cards (print servers) such as HP Laserjet printers, IBM Infoprint laser printers etc. This example is for a network HP Laserjet printer. To install a HP printer (with built-in Jetdirect print server) as a network printer you need to do the following - 1. Open the printer?s menu and enable the Network Card ? these print servers use a static IP address therefore, configure the IP address of the network card so it matches the IP range of your network. Eg. If your IP's are 192.168.0.xxx then set the network card to a high number say 100. (This is to prevent a conflict with the router issuing the same IP address to a computer on your network). Then set the Subnet Mask IP address to 255.255.255.0 If you have a wireless router then check the IP address range that the router issues to the computers on your network and configure the static IP address in the printer?s network configuration accordingly. 2. Install the HP printer driver on your computer/s using the LPT printer port. 3. Connect the printer with a LAN cable to the network hub/router. 4. Click on Printers and Faxes - right click on the HP printer and click on Properties. 5. Click on Ports and click on Add Port. 6. In available ports - click on Standard TCP/IP Port and then Configure port. 7. Tick the IP box and type in the IP address of the HP's printer IP address. 8. Click OK and tick Enable bi-directional support and then OK Install the HP printer driver on every computer on your network and configure the printer?s TCP/IP port as previously detailed. Do a test print page to check the printer. You can now print from any computer on your network.

Hello Geekman: Thanks for your help. The printer requires an admin key and no one seems to know it. I think once I'm in there, I can find the static ip address (I hope). I cannot find it anywhere else. Any suggestions on how to either get it or just reset the printer?
