Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to clean a DVD or any disc for a video game

  • Start from the center of the disk and clean straight out toward the edge. This will help prevent scratches that will affect performance. Never clean by rubbing in a circle around the DVD.

  • 2

Use a soft cloth or microfiber cloth to wipe it off. If it is just dust on the DVD, a soft cloth can often remove it without cleaning solutions. Microfiber cloths work well because they have a very tight weave of cloth that attracts dust and helps keep it from scratching the surface of the DVD.

  • 3

Mix rubbing alcohol and water in a one-to-one ratio and use it to clean the DVD to remove fingerprints or other oily residue. Rubbing alcohol works well because it is mild and evaporates quickly without leaving a residue. Rub the disk with a little of the solution and let it dry.

  • 4

Clean the DVD with a glass cleaner. Spray the window cleaner on to a rag and apply it with the rag instead of spraying it directly on the DVD. This is good for difficult cleaning situations such as cleaning soda off of a DVD.

  • 5

Apply toothpaste to buff out minor scratches. This may seem like a strange idea, but it works. Use mildly abrasive toothpaste, apply a dab to the scratched area, add a little water and buff it out. Make sure you rub from the center toward the edge instead of a radial pattern.

RDR-VX560 have recorded about 250 programs, on DVD-R and DVD+RW discs. Recently I went back and made sure that all had been finalized. I then checked out their operation on both the recorder and my new MacBook Pro computer - successfully. I now find that when I try to play them I am getting a number of them, about 10-15% come up and display "Disc cannot be played or recorded" and the disc is then ejected. Can you help me? I also have a number of discs which now display "There is no title" and will not open.

I'm sorry that the discs are not being able to read using either Computer nor with the Recorder itself. Based on the information you have provided, it appears that the discs are corrupted. Please check whether other discs are playing fine with the Recorder and computer to make sure that the drives are fine. If Recorder and Computer playing fine other discs, we can confirm that the issue is with the discs itself.
Clean the discs using a soft cloth starting from center to straight toward edge.
Use any software recovery software to recover the data. I have provided a link where you can download one for free. Click here to download the data recovery software.
Clean the discs by following the below step.

Thus cleaning the disk should always be your first move. Run warm water over the damaged disk to remove dust. If there is stubborn dirt or grease on the disk, gently rub it with your finger while you are washing it, and use a gentle detergent or liquid soap (with the water) or rubbing alcohol (in place of water). Anytime you rub or wipe a CD or DVD, you should do so by starting at or near the center of the disk and rubbing straight outward toward the edge to prevent further scratching. Shake the water off and let the disk air-dry (do not dry it with a towel or cloth, and don't sun-dry it either).

Now play the discs directly on the computer and recorder. If the issue persists, try again using the recovery software.
I hope the information helpful, please let me know if you require any clarifications.

    Thanks for understanding.

fifa 12 disc not working. saying disc needs cleaning

The first thing to do is clean the disk.

Hold the disk by the outer edge (side with writing on it should face towards the floor) and make sure your fingers don't touch the clear part of the disk.

Dampen a soft cloth that will not scratch the surface (microfiber cleaning cloths work best). Starting from the center of the disk, wipe in a straight line to the outer edge. Do not rub in circular motions. Repeat until entire surface has been cleaned.

Insert the disk into the console. If it still doesn't work, your lens may need to be cleaned. I'd recommend taking your console to a local gaming or tech store. A qualified technician will be able to clean the console without causing damage.

    Hope this helped,

dis is unreadable for the game black ops

There is a good chance that your game is scratched. Try cleaning it using the steps below:

Hold the disk by the outer edge (side with writing on it should face towards the floor) and make sure your fingers don't touch the clear part of the disk.

Dampen a soft cloth that will not scratch the surface (microfiber cleaning cloths work best). Starting from the center of the disk, wipe in a straight line to the outer edge. Do not rub in circular motions. Repeat until entire surface has been cleaned.

If this doesn't work, try restarting the Xbox and opening and closing the disk tray a few times.

If it is still unreadable, I'd recommend taking the disk to a local game store. Many places will offer a "buffing" service to clean the disk that can cost approximately $5-$10. There is chance that this will render the game unusable, so only do this as a last resort.

    Hope this helped,
    Dan

installed windows xp disk with a scratch and now wont boot up

If you have the Windows Key/License for the XP disk you can use someone else's copy of the XP disk or call Microsoft and ask for a replacement. You need the license and it must not have been installed on another PC previously.
