Tip & How-To about Dishwashers

How to troubleshoot your dishwasher

Instructions

    Dishwasher Does Not Run

  1. Make sure the power is on, door is latched and controls are set properly.

  2. Look to see if the door switch, timer or selector switch are defective. Solve this problem by using a screwdriver to adjust the door latch's strike slightly.

  3. Confirm that the power cord is plugged into the electrical outlet under the sink (if applicable).
  4. Dishwasher Won't Fill

  5. Check your hot water supply stop valve under the sink. Turn it counter clockwise to ensure that it is open.

  6. Turn off the power and wait for your dishwasher to cool.

  7. Look inside for a float located at the base of the unit. Lift out the float device and clean around the tube. Rinse off the float and reattach it making sure it moves up and down freely.
  8. Dishwasher Doesn't Drain
  9. Remove the air gap cover (short chrome cylinder located at the back of your sink) and clean it using a wire.

  10. Check the drain hose for kinks and blockages.

  11. Shut off the power to your dishwasher and remove the strainer located at the base of the cabinet under the bottom spray arm. Scrub it clean then reattach it to the appliance.
  12. Dishwasher Leaves Film on the Dishes

  13. Add a rinse additive to your washing cycle and see if this solves the problem. In addition, do not pre-rinse your dishes prior to placing them into the dishwasher. Food particles allow the detergent and drying agents to work more effectively.

  14. Listen to the spray arms during a wash cycle. If they appear to be moving too slowly, use a wire to clean out the spray holes.

  15. Make sure the dishes haven't blocked the detergent dispenser or jammed the spray arms.
  16. Dishwasher Leaks

  17. Cut back on the amount of detergent used during the wash cycle. Sometimes this alone will solve your problem.

  18. Make sure the appliance is level by adjusting the front feet up or down.

  19. Take off the lower front panel and check the hoses for leaks.

I cant get my dishwasher to start

Defective Door Switch? The next thing that could be causing your dishwasher to not start could be the door switch. This door switch is also sometimes called a door lock or door interlock switch. This switch is a safety feature and makes it so the dishwasher will not run if the door is open. If your dishwasher won't start, then it is possible this switch is bad. This switch is located inside the door panel. To determine if the door switch is bad, remove the control panel, locate the door switch, and test it for continuity.
Blown Thermal Fuse?Another part in your dishwasher that could be causing it to not start could be the thermal fuse. This fuse is designed to blow if the dishwasher overheats. If this fuse blows, it will need to be removed and replaced to make your dishwasher work. Most dishwashers have the thermal fuse located in the control panel area. To determine if the thermal fuse is bad, remove the control panel, locate the fuse, and test it for continuity.
Broken Door Latch? The part that holds your dishwasher door shut is called a door latch. 99% of the time this latch is made from plastic. If this latch becomes broken or cracked, it will prevent your door from closing properly. To determine if your door latch is bad, inspect your dishwasher door and be sure the latch is not broken.
Defective Main Control Board? The control board in your dishwasher supplies power to all components. If your dishwasher won't start, this could mean that the board is bad. If you have tested and confirmed working all the other steps above, then the control board in your dishwasher is most likely bad and replacing it would be a smart option at this point.

Our dishwasher is blinking CL - i think this means 'Close'... Even when the door is properly closed, it blinks CL and won't start!! Help!

Hi

Error CL appears when the dishwasher control detects door switch is open or door is open. You'll have to open the door and check the continuity of the door switch. If the door seems to be closed then it is the control has detected an issue with the door latch. Check the door latch & seals to make sure door is closing fine. Unplug the dishwasher from power outlet and wait for 10-15 minutes. Restart the dishwasher and check if the error is still there. If error still appears then you'll need to repalce the door switch/door latch. Hope this helps... Please post back for further assistance.

Dishwasher doesn't run
If you turn on the dishwasher and nothing happens:

1) Be sure the power is on, the door is latched, and the control is turned on. Also make sure the appliance cord is plugged into the electrical receptacle under the sink (some are hardwired and don't come unplugged).

2) If that doesn't solve the problem, the door switch, the timer, or the selector switch may be defective. To solve the problem, you may be able to adjust the door latch's strike slightly, using a screwdriver (turn off the power to the dishwasher at the electrical panel when working on it).

3) If that doesn't work, call an appliance repairperson.
