Replacing Riding Lawnmower Blade Belts.

I discovered on a Craftman Riding 3 bladed mower that there is an easy way to replace the belt for the blade pulleys.

The mandrel cover of the Left side blade is the only part you need to remove to replace the belt. You can insert the belt under the right side mandrel cover and onto the clutch pulley before finishing on the left side of the mower.

The tensioner or idler pulleys will contract when you pull on the belt. When you get to the left blade pulley you can turn the pulley with one hand and guide the belt with the other hand. The belt will walk right up onto the pulley. Attach the cover and you're done.

I like my method because you can stay away from a hot engine and replace the belt without waiting for the motor to cool off. You are also not fighting the mower clutch or drivebelt with my method.

I replaed the blade drive mandrel and reattacheed the blade and the blade does not freelyturn t is so bound up tht I cannot turnit manually

okay check see if brakes is on the mower, not the tractor but the blades of the mower deck if not then take belt off of the new mandrel side and try turning blade by hand. should turn freely if not mandrel is bad but unlikely. sounds like you changed wrong side mandrel I presume you have 2 blades and mandrels. or when you installed it back on. the belt may be bound up between a guide and pulley just kind of look things over before a tear apart. and then do your tear apart one step at a time then check blade to see if it turns does not seem serious you may have put belt on wrong, I have done it my self. hope this helps major note do not do this with engine running cut you hand off in a flash.

I have a dual blade deck on a Craftman's 15.5 OHC rider mower that needs to be greased. The blades make a loud racket when they are engaged. Any idea where to grease the mowing deck?

look closely and you will see the blades under the deck are physically bolted to the same gizmos which are spun by a belt on top the deck. these gizmos are called mandrels, and that is where the lube has to go. sometimes the top of the mandrel has a grease fitting and you may have to pull the deck safety shields off to get to them, and sometimes there are grease fittings on the bottom of the mandrels and you have to pull the deck off and turn it over to get to them. Then sometimes they are "lubed for life" with no grease fittings and you have to go to a small engine repair shop and buy new ones. if you get the deck belt off and there is any slop in the mandrel, then you are too late for grease and new mandrels are in order. they cost less than 50 bucks apiece. generally remove the deck, the blades, the belt, the pulleys, and a few bolts and nuts and reinstall new in reverse order. replace all the belts while you are at it.

one blade cuts and one doesn't. Is this a pulley or a belt problem?drive belt sound hasn't changed. can belts be adjusted or only replaced? what tools are needed?

Set the thing up on some blocks and try to remove the blade which does not turn. Since your belt is working, the pulley must be spinning or there would briefly be an awful racket. If the pulley is spinning but the blade is not then there is something wrong with the mandrel/spindle, or the blade has come loose and has somehow not cut off anyone's foot. Sometimes the pulley and top of the mandrel become rounded out but again there would be some metal on metal noise. Often there is a star shaped protrusion on the bottom of the mandrel which locks into the blade and by virtue of hitting some immovable object, that unstoppable keeper has been destroyed.

I changed the blade mandrel from my 42 inch cut craftman mower, I need to put it back together I need a directions on how to put the spring and pulley back on also I damaged the nut on the pulley, What size is the nut. this is on the left side of the mower.

Ok Go to partdirect on the Sears website. Enter the 917. xxxxx number that will bring up the drawings and should show you were the spring goes. As for the lock nut its 9/16-18 .You should have gotten a new locknut with the new mandrel.
GOOD LUCK

i have a crftmans rider ltx 1000 , i was cutting the lawn picked up a cable which wraped itself arouf the mandrels for the blades and stopped the mower , got cable removed started right up no problem , engaged blades and yikes a real bad vibration , so i ordered both mandrels replaced them still there put on new blades still there relaced the pulley on the bottom of engine still there can you tell me where to go from here ?

Yes, if you jammed something in the blades and the belt stopped, the engine pulley wore a thin spot in the belt.Every time that thin spot runs around a pulley it rides deeper in the pulley making it vibrate.Take the belt off and you should be able to see or feel the spot where the engine pulley burnt it. Replace the belt and it should fix it.
