Tip & How-To about Dishwashers

Improving Dishwasher Performance

If your dishwasher is not getting your items as clean as you'd like, the problem might be in your sprayer arm jets. The jets are the small openings in each of the sprayer arms. Sometimes the food grinder doesn't adequately remove all the food particles and other debris and this is pumped into the sprayer arms. You'll need to remove the arms (usually just a simple removal of a wing nut) and flush them with a strong jet of water from your faucet or the sink sprayer. I've sometimes found pieces of paper from fresh produce, small bits of plastic or bone fragments, and larger pieces of food inside the jets. A tweezer will help you remove these from the jets, thereby opening them so that the water can again be forced through them. A wooden toothpick can also be helpful cleaning the jets.

Your sprayer arms may be clogged.
The upper arm attaches to a tube in the back of the dishwasher. If the support clamps come loose, the upper spray tube will not be flush with the tube and can't carry water to the sprayer arms. Also the sprayer arms can become clogged with paper remnants, bone fragments, or pieces of peeling. You'll need to remove the sprayer arm and flush it at your sink. If there is a jet that is clogged, tweezers will help remove the residue.

Hello, I have a portable Moffat dishwasher Model: MRC3210SW159, Serial: AR608530A. We are getting small food bits stuck all over the dishes. Not sure what to take apart or do? Could you please give us some advice. We do not have the manual. Thank you!!!

Finally, the bottom of the door INSIDE the washer often get covered with gunk. Be sure and gently wash the bottom of the door INSIDE. You can open the door, spray some window cleaner on the bottom and then gently brush away the 'gunk.' Rinse with hot water from a pitcher or your sink sprayer and this can eliminate some of the residue that is showing on your dishes.

And of course, when you're loading the dishwasher, be sure none of the items are resting ON each other. This will prevent the water from circulating and cleaning.

I have the Whirlpool Quiet Partner III. It was installed new in July 2007. It is/was used on a regular-basis once a week. Dishwasher was running normally until 5-22-11. Now at end of a full cycle, dishes are still dirty and only some of the soap has been used up, whether it is Cascade powder or Cascade Action Pacs. I always use the recommended amount in the soap dispensers. Please advise. Thanks Douglas Smith

Make sure your water temperature is hot enough to dissolve the soap. Generally, the water temp. should be 140 degrees. Run some hot water at the tap before you turn on the dishwasher. This will assure that hot water is in the dishwasher as soon as you start it. Be certain that there aren't any large pieces in front of the dispenser tray. Sometimes casserole dishes, frying pans or baking pans can block the door and prevent it from opening.
Also, the sprayer arms might be clogged with bone fragments, peelings, bits of paper, etc. If this is the case, you'll need to remove the sprayer arm, flush and then check the jets. If you see "stuff" in the jets, they can be remove with tweezers.
Finally, make sure the upper sprayer arm hose is securely seated with the tube in the back of the dishwasher that carries the water up to the sprayer arm hose. If these two are not seated correctly, the water will not travel into the sprayer arm hose, the sprayer arm will not turn and your dishes will not get clean! I hope this helps. If it does, please come back to Fixya and rate my advice.

bottom sprayer does not clean or work, all items on bottom are the same as put in. Top is fine. runs through whole cycle.2 hr 29 min

Check the free rotation of the spray arm. If arm jets are clogged clean them.

After placing the dishes see to it that, the arm is freely rotating without any obstacles.
